Women’s Health 10K Recap

Sorry for the lack of posts this week, I feel like I have been doing nothing but working. Which is mostly right, except for going out and getting cray cray Tuesday night for my best friend’s birthday, but more on that later…

Last Sunday was my second race ever, which was the Women’s Health Run 10 Feed 10 10k! Brenda and I signed up for it a couple of months ago and I was super stoked to run our first race together and her first ever! Of course days before I had a pretty killer cold, so I barely got to run at all but it ended up being great for my legs on the morning of the race. I was hella nervous as predicted and the anxiety of the race was making me eat way more than I needed to be eating all week. I deal with anxiety in a real great manner, huh? The night before the race I watched one of my favorite and most inspirational (to me) movies, Blue Crush. What’s more motivating than the amazing body Kate Bosworth rocks in that movie? I iced my shins and knee and figured if all else failed I’d just run at a casual pace and not worry about my goal to come in at an hour or under.

It was super chilly Sunday morning and made for absolute perfect running weather. We waited in a long line at bag check, and in the middle of using the porta-potty’s the race began! Luckily your individual time doesn’t start until you cross the start line, so we were behind by at least 3 minutes. Brenda and I ran with one of her co-workers, Ebony, and it was such an amazing race. It started at Hudson River Park on the westside and went down into Tribeca and back around. Very flat course, and I didn’t feel like we were working too hard until the last 2.5 miles. I was running faster than I normally do these days, but it was a blast. The last .5-.75 miles was a full on sprint and I nearly puked. I think that’s the sign of a good race 🙂

Our official time: 1 hour and 2 SECONDS! I mean SERIOUSLY, 2 seconds? I used RunKeeper the whole time and it had the race as being closer to 6.4 miles rather than 6.2, but our overall pace was 9:40/mile. Honestly, with the injuries and lack of speed training I’ve been able to do in the last 6 months, I was ecstatic to come in under 10 min/miles! The free bagel and swag bag after was obviously a pretty sweet perk too. The best part hands down though was sharing the experience with Brenda. We talked almost the entire race and were laughing constantly, pretty much how you can always find us 🙂

Brenda’s amazing dad came down to support us so we grabbed coffee with him, then made our way to brunch. I had a veggie egg white omelet with an amazing salad and sweet potato fries, plus more mini pastries than I’d care to admit. Seriously, what kind of place brings an unlimited basket of pastries to your table before your meal has even arrived?! (Well, in case you want to go there and commit carb-icide, it’s called Cafe Joul and a super awesome hottie waitress by the name of Tara will take care of you if you tell her Brenda and I have gotten weird with you before…)

Followed up with walking all over and eating a gourmet cinnamon chocolate s’mores at The Plaza hotel. Oh, we fancy.

My only complaint is who puts a $5 s’mores on a paper plate?

Insert more candy, froyo, a pretzel and some nuts. We were just pretending that a 6 mile run is an excuse to eat EVERYTHING.

Then we proceeded to get major stomach aches, lay around and watch Netflix for hours. Quit being so jealous

I took 3 rest days this week, and it’s so funny to me to have a day or 2 to not feel sore. I think once a month it’s a great idea to take a longer than usual rest period. Let your muscles actually catch up and restore themselves. It’s scary, but I drowned that fear in many shots of vodka for Brenda’s birthday Tuesday night.

I sat this round out, because I don’t do tequila. I’d be arrested if I did.

I mean, we’re almost 25. We need to carry on like we’re still 20 for at least a couple of more years.

Note to self: don’t order anything that comes with a candle at 2 AM when drunk. Friends may end up having their hair caught on fire. From a piece of birthday cheesecake.


(Yeah, we ate the hairy cheesecake anyways. YOLO) We also eat cheesecake with our hands like we are cavemen. This post is just a disclaimer that I have very few friends because this is how we carry on, hahaha.

I hopped back on the healthy train yesterday morning and ran 3 slow as crap miles. The kind of miles that made me feel like it was my first time running more than a mile. Those runs used to make me so angry, but I just look to them as humbling now. I gain control. “Hey legs, you want to show off and not run faster than an 11 minute mile? Fine, I’ll slow down to a slow shuffle and show you who’s boss b*tch.” <- Real live conversation that happened. Then I came home and spent some quality time with Jillian Michaels in my 2×2 inch room (Janae you inspired me to get back into Jillian! 🙂 ) and proceeded to knock everything over as I tried to do plank jacks. My yoga mat was completely covered in sweat after the 30 minutes and I was shaking pretty bad. How does that happen after only one month off of strength training?

I came up with a pretty sweet protein dessert last night afterwards. I always feel the need to eat a ton of protein after a strength work out, because if you’re lifting these heavy 8 and 5 pounders I’ve got over here, you need a whole buttload of protein. I microwaved 3 egg whites in a coffee mug with cinnamon, plopped it on a plate and topped it with coconut pumpkin cookie crumbles, sugar free syrup and a scoop of Better’n Peanut Butter. The coconut pumpkin cookie crumbles are inspired from Stuft Mama, as are most of anything I eat anymore. She is a freaking genius.

Coconut Pumpkin Cookie Crumbles

  • 2 tbsp coconut flour
  • 1 tbsp pumpkin
  • 1/8 tsp baking powder
  • cinnamon, 1 packet sweetener (i use splenda), pinch of sea salt
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened non-dairy milk (i use unsweet vanilla almond milk)

Combine all ingredients in a little container, then add more milk if you need. As you mix it all together it will get a crumbly consistency, so add milk until it reaches the consistency you want. Put it in the fridge to get cool for about an hour or more. Put on everything.

I think the only difference is Stuft Mama’s recipe she uses unsweetened apple sauce, and sometimes she adds protein powder. Cause she’s a genius. 🙂
