End of Summer ’17

Is it just me or did this summer literally fly by in the blink of an eye? July was spent basically doing nothing but working and moving into our new apartment and then August was a lot more relaxing and fun. I made it to the beach 3 times in August which was great and I have a new fav beach to go to around this area. We went out to Spring Lake, NJ which is an adorable town about an hour and a half drive from NYC. First, let me back track to the beginning of August so I can wrap up my summer.

One of my good friends from my Chanel days, Sharde, opened up a nail salon in the Bronx and I could not be more proud of her! It’s called Saint Glam and if you are in the NYC area, please take the 6 train 1 stop into the Bronx and check it out! The salon is fabulous and so are the nail artists!

Beach trips with these lovely ladies (+John) that were unfortunately a little chilly but still fun, and obviously ice cream trips at the beach are mandatory.

We only had 1 wedding this summer (#blessed) which was my cousin Lisa’s and it was beautiful and on such a beautiful Friday evening up in Binghamton! It was our first wedding together being married and we kept saying how happy we were that our wedding and planning for it is over LOL My cousin was so happy it was finally the day of and almost over too- weddings are lovely but so much work.

The Friday of labor day weekend I headed to Atlantic City with Andrea, her sister Ally and our friend Patty. We stayed at The Borgata and it was my first time in AC (romantically known here as Atlantic Shitty) and it was exactly how I envisioned it. So fun but so trashy. We had an AMAZING dinner though at Angeline followed by a fun 90’s cover band (which made me feel 102 years old) and a bedtime of midnight. Nothing better than a girl’s weekend away!

sausage stuffed clams
my rigatoni with vodka sauce, brussels sprouts and Patty’s chicken parm
Andrea’s ravioli and Ally had rigi’s too
orange flavored cannolli’s

I had a gnarly hangover all of Saturday and most of Sunday haha Finally had some life back in me on Labor Day so I took John to our favorite brunch spot (specifically favorite french toast brunch spot) Le Grainne Cafe to thank him for all his hard work painting our living room the last few weeks!

Then we headed out to NJ for the day for one last pool day with the Golden’s (our 2nd fam!). No one was happy that summer is ending.

We went back to their house for a delicious BBQ and drinks and had such a great time as always. So happy they are in our life! ❤

This past weekend I taught my Saturday morning classes at Push Pedal and then subbed my favorite class to sub at Harlem Cycle, Striver’s Row, right after. It’s a 30 min cycle/ 30 min strength class that we offer and it’s SO fun to teach! I grabbed coffee with my co-worker after class, ate a bagel sandwich at home with John and then headed back to Push Pedal to hang out for our charity ride. We had a ride for Hurricane Harvey and it was sold out! Such a great turn out with some of Washington Height’s businesses supporting us with food and drinks!

The rest of Saturday we unpacked and cleaned which feels NEVER ENDING. John finished painting our living room but we still need to organize and decorate. Here is a glimpse!

Sunday I subbed a 10 AM class at Harlem Cycle (45 min cycle/15 min core- so fun) and then John and I headed out for a day of eating and walking around. It’s our favorite thing to do here and we haven’t had a day to do it in MONTHS which is insane.

And now back to the grind today! I had to work super early this morning so no class today and it is a very welcomed rest day. I don’t plan rest days since I teach and often sub last minute so it always feels SO good to me these days to not have to move my body intensely for at least 24 hours 🙂

How was the end of your summer?

Monday.

Happy Thanksgiving-week guys! Hopefully today is more like your Wednesday if you have Thursday and Friday off. Sometimes short weeks can feel longer than normal weeks but let’s keep trucking! Recap of last week…

Monday

Taught 3 classes (6:45 AM, 5:45 PM and 6:45 PM). I am not on the bike the whole time for any of my classes anymore and my body has benefited so much. Would you ever take 3 spin classes in a day? I don’t know anyone who would, so why would an instructor do it? I feel a lot stronger teaching off the bike these days which took years! However 3 in a day is still a lot since I still have over 8 hours of work sandwiched between them.

Tuesday

Taught another unexpected triple! I taught my normal 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM but helped out last minute for the 6:00 PM too. I had wanted to get in a treadmill run before my PM class but couldn’t when I picked up the 6 PM.

Wednesday

Taught my 6:30 AM class at Harlem Cycle and it was a great crowd! I subbed out my 6:00 PM class and was going to go to bootcamp and get my own workout in but was absolutely exhausted after 7 classes in 3 days. I went home and relaxed in bed which was so necessary.

Thursday

Taught my 6:30 AM class and rode for most of it to get my workout in. John and I had dinner plans with our roommate after work so it was my only chance to sweat. We have lived with our roommate for almost 6 years (it isn’t unusual in NYC to have a roomie when you are in a couple, hello most expensive rent ever) but we don’t get to hang out often because of our schedules. She wasn’t able to come to our wedding because she was out of the country for work so she treated to us a delicious Italian dinner at a place in our ‘hood I had never been to called Saggio. A little gem way uptown! We had the best calamari ever to start.

img_0746

Then I had the squid ink linguine with grilled calamari (obsessed with it) in a spicy tomato sauce.

img_0747

And had a totally unnecessary piece of tiramisu to cap it off.

img_0748

Sorry for horrible pics, it was very dark inside and too small to blind people with the flash!

Friday

Taught my 6:30 AM class at Harlem Cycle (#FriYaY) and subbed a 6:15 PM class. My legs were pretty much not working at this point as this was class #9 and #10 for the week. John and I went to a new pizza place after class that replaced our beloved Patsy’s a few months ago. Since I started eating more paleo-ish before my wedding, my craving for pizza has gone down soooo much. If you know me, you know that you never saw that day coming. I can’t eat an entire (cheese-less) pizza to myself anymore! It’s in the same exact spot but under new ownership and a new name- Zia Maria. Happy to report it was AMAZING! Didn’t get a pic but it was absolutely delicious. So happy to have a replacement pizza joint back in our lives.

Saturday

Sweet, sweet REST! I had to work all day and I treated myself to a mani/pedi after. Then I headed to a Friendsgiving! A girl that I love that comes to my classes invited me to her place for a feast and it was great. Always fun to meet new people! John made me green bean casserole to take with me since I was at work all day. He is the best wife husband 🙂

img_0759

SUNDAY

Brenda met me for a 2 mile run/walk and then took my spin class I was subbing at 10 AM. The run was horrible- it was the first absolutely freezing day of the year (colder than the 10K I ran last weekend) and the wind was insane. I wanted to get 4-5 miles in to keep this distance shape I sort of built but oh well! We had brunch after class and then I went home and stayed on the couch for a solid 7 hours with John watching movies and staying away from winter. After 28 winters you would think I would be used to it…

Here’s my workout plan for this week which includes traveling!

Today- Taught spin and heading to Barry’s Bootcamp tonight after finishing some work (have my usual class covered tonight)

Tuesday- teaching 3 classes, trying to get a 2-3 mile run in before my AM class

Wednesday- teaching spin and a 2-3 mile run

Thursday- 5 mile turkey trot! And a long walk after dinner is always essential

Friday- Trying out my first Orange Theory class up in Rochester!

Saturday- Planning to hit up a spin class and BodyPump class at the YMCA in Rochester! #GuestPass 😉

Sunday- Rest day, maybe a hot yoga class in Binghamton before heading back to the city

What are your workout plans for this busy week?

Workouts + Race + FOOD

Over the last 5 years of blogging, I still have never gotten more creative with my titles. It’s not a strong suit of mine. It’s to the point and I guess that’s what matters!

I am going to do a recap of our honeymoon in Los Angeles/Vegas soon but for now want to get back into workouts and food related posts!

Workouts

A bazillion spin classes a week 🙂 I have 8 set classes per week and then I usually sub 3-4 more. If you are in the NY area and want my schedule, shoot me an email or follow me on Instagram (@jenspinsnyc) for my schedule! First class at Harlem Cycle is only $12.50 and I can bring you as a guest to NYSC if it’s your first class there.

img_0649

I run here and there and do push-ups every day whenever I get the chance- literally, on the bathroom floor at work when I am in there! It takes a few seconds to bust out 10 of them and get some blood flowing. I unfortunately have not been to Barry’s since I got home from my honeymoon! Hoping to make my debut back there this weekend. I have lost some muscle and I am sad about that!

Races

Andrea and I ran a 10K last Saturday! The weekend before we ran 4 miles together and it was the longest I’ve run in quite awhile but luckily because of spin I still have some endurance! The race was FREEZING but gorgeous. It was called the Falling Leaves 10K.

img_0707

The race FLEW by talking with this girl. So thankful for our friendship, thanks to blogging! 🙂 The post-race spread was awesome! They had tons of flavors of bagels, cream cheese and peanut butter to spread, Clif bars and these new Clif squeezeable food pouches (I had the banana mango coconut, so good), apples and grapes! I am really longing to get back into good distance shape and I was just a little sore the day after the 10K, so I have to try to stay in running shape this winter which is never easy! So far I am planning my half marathon comeback at the Binghamton Half Marathon on May 7th and maybe get into the NYC Half in March through the lottery!

FOOD

Just some random pictures of amazing things I’ve had the last couple of weeks. Let’s just say I have not been eating all that healthy since I got home from my honeymoon, save for some lunch time salads that are too boring to get a picture of!

Amazing vegan pastries John got us a few weeks ago from Cinnamon Snail. Top left is a pumpkin pecan donut, the bottom middle is a pumpkin donut topped with a pumpkin cookie (?!) and the top right is a peanut butter chocolate cinnamon bun. As ridiculously amazing as you would expect!

img_0655

I was sick a couple of weeks ago and asked the woman working at Juice Press what would be good for a cold. This is the BEST smoothie/juice I’ve ever had. It’s called Nurse Ginger Green and it is almost worth $10.

img_0660

AMAZING bacon and egg breakfast sandwich that Andrea and I had for brunch at Chelsea Station. The bun was sweet and the salad was salty and it was perfect refuel after our 4 mile run and spin class!

img_0681

My new drink obsession: matcha lattes. They are a lot more than coffee so I’m just treating myself on weekends but they are GOOD. I am totally not a green tea person by any means, but a soy matcha latte with splenda is delish and supposedly there are lots of health benefits to matcha. Plus, it’s pretty.

img_0685

And lastly we have some delicious chicken hibachi from Benihana. I had never been before and it was so fun! The chicken fried rice was incredible due to the fact that they put stick of garlic butter in it.

img_0696

So now that I am back to blogging- tell me what you would like to see! Day in the life posts? Weekly workout recaps? Spin playlists/workouts? Rambles like I usually do?

Ruby is here! (+some other updates)

Hey there! It’s been a little while again but I’m still here! The biggest/best thing that has gone on since I wrote last is that my best friend Brenda (ya’ll know her on here by now!) finally had her baby a week ago today!! I got to be there for the whole time she was in labor (about 17-18 hours) and now her gorgeous little babe is here in our world. Of course we made our time at the hospital a blast…

Obviously she had her Spinning water bottle with her.. homegirl took a spin class the day before this! My hero.

Obviously we watched Broad City all night long <3

And finally at 9:25 AM, Ruby came into the world!

Ruby and Daddy!

I am finally an Aunt!! :)
I am finally an Aunt!! 🙂

She is absolutely perfect and I am so excited to start my journey as an Aunt! I also fell even more in love with Brenda watching her become a mommy. One of the most special moments of my entire life!

And on to other stuff…

I don’t want to go on about too much right now but lets just say I’m still dealing with anxiety. I am learning how to manage it/accept it/live with it more than I was. It’s a really hard, AWFUL process but I focus on each hour and just getting through it. I know this won’t last forever but it certainly feels like it is going on forever.

So while I am still on a hiatus from teaching Spin, I have been going to CYC at least 3 times a week and running here and there. Running is SO hard after taking basically all winter off and not being at all consistent. Here’s what my running is looking like right now (in the spirit of keeping it real)

IMG_8514

I’m doing some run/walk intervals but nothing set- just running until my lungs feel like they are going to explode (thanks, allergies) and then walking a bit. Getting past 2 miles right now feels sooooo hard. A good friend said the other day to me that training for the first 3 miles is always the hardest when getting back into running and she is so right. Once I can consistantly/easily run 3 miles again, I’ll start training for longer runs. I don’t have a half marathon or any race at all right now planned until October, but I may try for a 5 miler at the end of next month. CYC is so amazing and hands down the best spin classes I’ve ever taken! They are so motivating and SO fun, plus super challenging but I can feel myself getting stronger. If you are in the NYC area, let me know if you want to try a class with me!

Natalies class from this past Saturday!
Natalies class from this past Saturday!

This past weekend was an absolute blast. John’s mom came to visit us and we took her to most of our favorite spots- of course you need at least a full week with us for us to take you to alllll of the best spots 😉 Friday night started with Patsy’s pizza and a walk down 8th avenue from 23rd to 14th St to show all the fun gay culture through Chelsea- she loved it!

Saturday morning we headed to brunch at Le Grainne Cafe, our absolute favorite place for french toast and delicious coffee. This is hands down the best french toast in the city.

IMG_8507

We strolled through Chelsea Market and Union Sq, then I took a quick class at CYC and met back up with them in Soho at Harney & Son’s tea. From there we walked through Soho to a few other stores, then took the 6 uptown to show her Grand Central. I always forget how magical Grand Central is until I’m seeing it through someone else’s eyes!

It started raining so we cancelled our initial plan of walking from Grand Central to Times Square and just headed to dinner. We had to of course take her to our favorite, 5 Napkin Burger, as we take pretty much everyone who visits us!

Sunday morning we headed to one of our favorite bagel places, Absolute Bagel, on the Upper West Side. This is right near the gigantic cathedral on 110th st that we wanted to see. We’ve been past it a million times but never actually went in until Sunday! It is so huge. Definitely a must see here.

IMG_8515

We walked all through Central Park and took the train down to the West Village to get Big Gay Ice Cream…obviously 🙂 We were pretty exhausted so we ended the trip by heading back uptown to Trader Joe’s and last but not least, Shake Shack. If you can’t eat red meat or cheese like me, they have chicken sausage dogs that are incredible!

IMG_8520

According to my FitBit we walked about 10-11 miles total for the weekend!

Fill me in on your lives!! What’s new?! 🙂

27th Birthday + Brenda’s Wedding + Baby Shower :)

First off, thank you so much for the love and support on my last post. You guys are SO awesome and supportive, and it’s even more awesome to receive that kind of support from people you have never even met before. That is very special and I appreciate it so much. ❤

Besides my birthday last weekend, I also want to post about my best friend’s wedding and baby shower that have happened in the last few months since I’ve been MIA! She is one of the most important people in my life so she is going to take up most of this post 😉

Back tracking to my birthday celebration last weekend, I had a fabulous Saturday and Sunday ringing in my 27th year. 3 weeks ago I had no hope of feeling up for celebrating my birthday… time can be an amazing thing. Saturday during the day John took me to get bagels at our favorite spot, Brooklyn Bagel, then shopping and other girly crap 🙂 I utilized my first blowout that came with my CYC package I posted about to get all done up for our nice dinner. The girl did such an amazing job and this was the express package where you go to them with dry hair and they just use dry shampoo and a curling iron. I am still so bummed that I wasn’t blessed with the art of how to do hair!

IMG_8190

John took me to one of my favorite spots for dinner, a place I’ve only been to once for a work function but I’ve been thinking about it daily since! It’s a brazilian steakhouse called Texas de Brazil and you have to be prepared to eat until you are ready to die. This isn’t for portion controllers, ya’ll. They have 2 options- obviously the main option is to have the meat and the salad bar and then they have just the salad bar where they don’t serve you the meat. When I say salad bar I don’t mean like a grocery stores salad bar, I mean it’s basically a 4 course meal around a circle. I went without the meat because I can’t eat most of it anyways and went HAM on the salad bar.

round 1 of 97

So of course they have salad, but they also have shrimp, sushi, raw tuna, smoked salmon, all kinds of delicious herb-y olives and vegetables, potato salads, fruit, and the best lobster bisque and bread EVER. It’s all so fresh and delicious. Favorite place on earth. John ate so much meat and I ate so much salad+ that we were plotting how to leave the restaurant. Like an actual plot on how to move our bodies because we just couldn’t. Success.

Sunday morning started with taking a CYC class with Brenda and we both had such a good class. Afterwards, we met up with our other friends for a super fun birthday brunch at The DL which offers a $30 brunch with unlimited mimosas.

It was so much fun and my friend Sharde is so great for throwing me yet another awesome birthday celebration!

Speaking of back-tracking; in the last few months that I have been off the blog world, my best friend who I have written about 2,000 times got MARRIED in January!! I’m sure I mentioned last year that she is PREGNANT with my baby niece 🙂 If I didn’t, now ya know. I am sosososo excited to be an aunt in just about a month!! Her wedding was amazing and you’d never know we planned it in less than 2 weeks. It was Friday January 30th at City Hall and absolutely perfect.

We also had Brenda’s baby shower about a month ago as well for baby RUBY! 🙂 Brenda’s other close friend Mandy and I planned the shower together and thank goodness for her creativity and artistic abilities because I have none! We had it at Sprinkles Cupcakes which has an awesome party room where you can decorate dozens of cupcakes- perfect for this kind of occasion or a kid’s birthday party!

Any babies in your life or recent weddings?

This is a ramble.

We still have some catching up to do so be prepared, this is looooong!

Basically my life is spent doing nothing but working. Luckily right now I love my jobs, but I don’t love cleaning, laundry or grocery shopping and I had to do all of the above on my 3-day weekend. But the weekend before was no work and ALL play, so lets get to that fun stuff first.

John went out of town for a few days so Brenda and I planned a romantic weekend together since we hardly get to see each other for more than an hour at a time these days. First up: seeing our favorite comedians from the show Broad City! Anyone watch that on Comedy Central? Well it’s hilarious and a very REAL depiction of what life is like in NYC when you’re a broke 20-something. They were performing at FIT along with Bevers from the show and Jason Mantzoukas because he is at literally every comedy show ever. The show was awesome and we were hurting from laughing.

On the way home I stopped and got myself a cheese-less pizza from Patsy’s to take back to my apartment and eat alone in bed. It was seriously glorious. I love John to death but sometimes you just need a night alone in bed… with pizza. Ya feel me?

photo 4 (2)

I slept in Saturday morning and casually drank coffee and watched TV. I NEVER get relaxing mornings anymore since I’m always teaching, so this was much needed. In the afternoon I headed to meet Brenda at Whole Foods for lunch then we spent the rest of the day walking all over the park. Once we got back to my apartment for a sleepover (yes, were 11) we ordered cheese-less Domino’s (please don’t comment on my pizza addiction) and watched Blue Crush because we will always be wanna-be Surfer Girls.

Sunday morning we lifted a little before my spin class, then headed to my friend’s birthday brunch at Bagatelle. It was Pride weekend so we knew we were in for some fun. It started out innocently enough with rounds of Prosecco, then some appetizers, and the main courses. She had a pre planned menu and we all passed the dishes and ate what we wanted. It was the perfect amount of food because we all really wanted more champagne than food 😉

Happy Birthday baybeeeeee
Happy Birthday baybeeeeee

It was so fun and I hadn’t drank since my birthday so it was much needed. Brenda and I went back to my apartment for awhile and I was asleep by 8. Perfect weekend!

Last week my spin schedule was lightened and I was so grateful. I really needed some rest so the holiday weekend was perfect for it. My Thursday and Friday classes were cancelled, so I did a 3 mile run on Thursday then went to a CYC class on Friday morning. CYC is a boutique cycle studio (like SoulCycle except not a cult and less expensive) and Brenda loves it so I’ve wanted to try it for awhile. It gave me a run for my money, that’s fa sho. 45 minutes of crazy-ness including 4 songs where we turned up the resistance almost all the way so we weren’t moving our legs much and used 2-3 lb weights for back-to-back strength training. Sure that weight is nothing but it gets into your tiny little muscles and left me shaking! The founder of CYC, Keoni, was the instructor so it was a blast. He has the best energy and inspired me so much! It was nice to be the student and not instructor for once!

photo 1 (4)

French toast, coffee and cuddling was next up for my 4th of July.

photo 2 (5)

I alternated from my bed, my couch, and a lot of cleaning for the rest of the day. It was so nice to be able to catch up on life things that never get done because I’m always working!

Saturday morning was long run time with Andrea! This girl is going to be my saving grace for marathon training. The 3 miles I ran on Thursday were terrible, and while I still felt out of shape on Saturday it went much smoother. 8 gorgeous miles with the birthday girl!

Followed by my favorite brunch with John at Grey Dog!

photo 4 (5)

Fried egg, turkey sausage and goat cheese on a croissant with sweet potato fries. YAAAS.

We walked around and got coffees and started to look for running sneakers for John becauuuuuuuuuse he told me he wants to start doing a little running with me. Yes, I almost died. I hope he sticks to it! 😉

What else? I ate fried chicken Saturday night. First time in like 4 years? It sounded so good, John loves it, and it was only $5. Long hair, don’t care.

Taught Spin yesterday morning with a little upper body lift before, then had an extremely active day that has left me very sore today. Started with a nice walk to get an acai bowl at The Juice Shop in Flatiron. Highly recommend this place.

photo 2 (6)

They also gave me 3 free green juices (maybe they could sense I ate fried chicken the night before?) but they didn’t taste so good, not even a little. I did some healthy damage at Trader Joe’s and lugged 2 very heavy bags back home. Then took 3 big bags of clothes from our cleaning frenzy Friday down to Buffalo Exchange to see what I could sell and donated the rest to Good Will. I made out pretty well and it felt really good to get rid of those size 2 pants I will never fit in again. I’ve been holding on to them for too long! Size 6/8 is working out just fine for me, thank ya very much 🙂

Meal preppin’.

photo 3 (4)

I’ll share what I’m eating this week and my new obsession from Trader Joe’s later this week! Feels good to blab on about my life to you all again! 🙂

How was your July 4th weekend?? Oh I also ate a hot dog on Friday too. John bought the all pork ones since I can’t have beef and it fulfilled a 3 year craving for me, on a nice white bun with ketchup and mustard. Mmmm the bad stuff!

AND- 29 days til Costa Rica. But who’s counting?!?! 😀

HI!

HELLOOO! Ahhh, I miss you guys. So much. My new schedule is still something I’m trying to adjust to so I need to get on a blogging schedule since the only time I can blog now is at night when I’m home. I’ve just been subbing a lot of night classes and then waking right back up to teach in the mornings, so my nights are spent getting home at 9, wolfing down a bowl of cereal (meal prep fail) and going to sleep sweaty. Beautiful, I know. But the new job is going good so far and overall I am 79% less stressed. It’s making a difference already!

So here’s what I’ve been up to the last couple weeks in a big summary of pics. Let’s get caught up!

Enjoying my weekends off to the FULLEST! I’m not one to waste a weekend day doing nothing anymore, so brunching is always necessary. This is my new favorite brunch meal from Grey Dog:

I finally met the gorgeous & super sweet Andrea the weekend before last! She lives in Hoboken so she met me for a 6 mile run & took my Sunday spin class where we had a blast! Brunch afterwards at Tavern 29 up on the rooftop.

I’m looking forward to being friends with this gal. She is a doll and her positive energy is just what I need in my life! 🙂

1st day at the new job and it was so beautiful outside. Took my stripey pants, studded oxfords & homemade salad outside to eat… Along with everyone who works on Park Ave. Love it.

First week I did so good with meal prep, even snack prep, so I have to get back on that train because I only get 30 minutes now & it’s too hectic to buy and eat in just 30 mins!

Absolutely loving my outfits. I’ve always wanted to dress preppy but never thought I could pull it off. I’m loving it.

I went home to crash and John went to dinner at Dinosaur BBQ in Harlem with a friend and brought me back pulled pork, mac & cheese and coleslaw. Their mac is my favorite ever so I indulged… So dumb. Still in pain 4 days later. Cheese (except blue, goat or feta) and I just can’t.

11 PM that night I left for a less-than-24-hour trip to Binghamton to see my amazing little brother graduate from Binghamton University.
photo 5 (14)
He is hands down the smartest, funniest & most kind hearted person I’ve ever known. Love that he is my brother! I was actually emotional watching him put on his cap & gown & walk across the stage. We’ve been through hell and back with family things for the last 2 years, but he perservered and still did amazing graduating with a Biology degree!

That wraps up my first week and a half of my new life! The nights I don’t teach, it’s pretty amazing to be home by 6:15! Oh, it also helps that my new co-workers are absolutely HILARIOUS. Like, they make me cry from laughing so hard and just being goofy. I fit right in 🙂

🙂 Tell me how you are!!! What’s new?!

More/Fitness Half Marathon

Half Marathon #5 was completed this past Sunday with my best friend Brenda. Truthfully, it was the worst race I can ever remember running. It was unexpectedly hot and we were dehydrated and completely over it from the start. We finished 4 minutes slower than our first half together last year (and 12 minutes slower than my PR), but this one included multiple walk breaks and about a 5 minute stop at the port-a-potties at mile 5, so we are still in much better shape than last year! At the end of the day, all that really matters is that we got out there and did what we could and we did it together which was automatically a blast.

Stuffed our faces afterwards at brunch with my new post-race ritual of chocolate chip pancakes, eggs and turkey sausage.

Followed by a pedicure that John treated me to. BEST IDEA EVER to get one after a half! The leg massage was so great. I broke my right big toe in half during this race along with worsening the permanent blister below my 2nd toe on the right side, too. It was a pretty painful pedicure to say the least. photo 4

I taught spin Monday morning with SO much less soreness than last month’s half! I ended up finishing last weeks training with 99 miles total of running and cycling. Insanity.

My brother came to visit Monday night and stayed with us all day yesterday and John was also off of work from the day. We had a blast. Drew came to my spin class with me Tuesday morning and KILLED it! It was his first spin class ever and of course he beat me in mileage. Boys. Then we went to brunch with John, went back home and laid in my bed all day watching TV and napping. Dinner was Domino’s and POPEYES FRIED CHICKEN because we were just in need of a fat day. We ate super early and took another nap, so on the way to the bus station at 10 PM we stopped for froyo at Orange Leaf where they were selling froyo for $4.15 regardless of the weight of the cup for tax day. We ball hard. photo 4 (1)

It was a super fun few days and I’m paying for it today in exhaustion and bloat 😉

Did any of you guys run the More/Fitness half last weekend? What did you think if you did or did it in the past? I just can’t pay $80 to run in Central Park again. Not when I run it for free and not when the swag bag is absolutely terrible!

Deliciousness + A Lot of Spin

How is it already Thursday?! This week has FLOWN by because I have taught Spin every single day since last Friday! It’s been a crazy non-stop week, that’s for sure. I welcomed today’s rest day with open arms and sadly one extremely sore and pained hip and glute 😦 I need to spend a lot of time foam rolling the next few nights before the More/Fitness Half Marathon on Sunday that I’m obviously ill-prepared for. Brenda and I ran for 1 hour and 25 minutes last Sunday before my spin class and I was seriously dead the last 15 minutes. Where am I supposed to fit running in when I’m teaching spin so many mornings?! So many things are up in the air right now and I’m hoping to have it figured out by next month and hopefully that includes a big change. 🙂

Backing up to last weekend because it was so awesome, on Sunday after my long run and Spin class, I met up with my good friend Alyse and her awesome roommate and other friends that I love for a belated birthday brunch. Alyse is the sweetest! She took me to ABV which has my favorite eggs benedict in the world and amazing iced coffee; pretty much my two favorites. photo 1

The hash browns take it to a whole new level. A whole new level of caloric insanity, I’m sure 😉

After brunch we stopped by Dough Loco, a doughnut joint that Alyse had told us about that we had to stop at. No one else really had room for a doughnut the size of their head except me, and I’ll blame that on the fact that I did almost 3 hours of cardio before hand. So, a blueberry doughnut was part of my refueling, natch. photo 2

We hung out at Alyse’s apartment for awhile before John and I split to hang out down in the East Village for awhile before his belated birthday dinner. We went to Brindle Room because it’s John’s favorite and the food is so delicious. We had beer battered pork belly for an appetizer and it was ridiculous. So, so good. photo 4

I had the happy hour $5 mussels and fries for dinner because… $5. And they are GOOD. photo 5

Followed up with froyo at a new-to-me place that I am now obsessed with and thankful it’s so far downtown I won’t be running there more than once on the weekends, Yooglers. So many awesome flavors and SO.MANY.TOPPINGS. HELLO, POPTARTS AS A TOPPING!!!!

AND oatmeal squares, aka my favorite cereal but it’s $8 a box here so I never buy it?! Actual heaven.

Included in that weekend was teaching spin Friday morning, Saturday morning, Sunday morning (+8 mile run), then bright and early Monday morning. I also taught Monday night and came home to a great dinner late Monday night. I needed some healthy grub after all the junk from Sunday! photo 1 (1)

Sweet potato with goat cheese & raspberry preserves, egg whites, baguette with smashed avocado, and my first attempt at a poached egg that I overcooked by… a lot. It was still good! Followed by a bowl of my current cereal obsession, strawberry frosted mini wheats with vanilla almond milk. photo 1 (2)

Tuesday morning after I taught spin, I came home to finally take a glorious nap and try to regain some energy. Around 2 I thought I should probably go try to find some food so I went to a place in my neighborhood I have seen but never had the chance to try. It’s basically a cafe with all kinds of salad, sandwiches, etc and it’s directly across from Columbia hospital. The food is SO fresh and much more affordable than places in midtown! I got a turkey sandwich on this delicious tomato foccacia bread and a huge feta salad. photo 4 (1)

So good.

And my healthy dessert I’ve been having every night this week with no guilt: photo 4 (2) Even if you don’t have an allergy to dairy, these are worth eating. So Delicious brand coconut almond bars for 170 calories each, topped with vanilla almond butter. Of course the almond butter is optional but… not really. 😉 They have the exact consistency of real ice cream but only 10 grams of sugar which is really good for a dessert. They are a little pricey but worth it if you can’t eat the real deal!

And finally last night, I taught back-to-back spin classes which is only the 2nd time I’ve ever done it. I must say, teaching twice in a day isn’t bad when it’s spread out but back to back is pretty brutal. By the end, I was light headed and was completely depleted of everything! photo 2 (3)

I ate a banana right away then a quick protein shake and some Popchips with 1/2 an avocado for dinner. Not even remotely fancy when trying to prepare dinner at 9 PM and SVU is about to start! Did anyone watch last night? I am so happy that guy finally offed himself. He was so creepy.

How has your week been with workouts and food? My sweet tooth has been off the charts lately, woops.

NYC 1/2 Marathon

Ahhhhh I hate when I go too long without posting. It’s been a really crazy week and a half so I apologize and I’m going to do a quick re-cap from the half marathon! Yes, I ran it and I am alive and that was my only goal. 😉

As you know if you read my blog, I got into the NYC 1/2 Marathon very unexpectedly when they reopened the lottery for a second chance. I believe that was back in December, and I basically didn’t train at all. You know the drill; way too cold, I don’t run on treadmills, I was sick for weeks. I did 3 “long” runs total- a 6 miler and two 8 milers, but I taught a bazillion spin classes and that was my saving grace cardiovascular-wise. Muscle wise? No. Nothing can prepare your muscles for 2+ hours of pounding on the pavement except… running for hours on pavement. I have never been this sore in my entire life.

I’ve also been having worse and worse hip pain that has affected my foot (left side only) so I was nervous that running this would make it worse or turn it into a real injury. Luckily it didn’t, but it was another factor that made me not-so-excited for the race. I went to the expo Friday night and ended up catching the bug that bites you when you go to a race expo… the excitement bug! I also bought “The Stick” to really beat the crap out of my legs for preparation. It definitely helped so much and I highly recommend buying one!

Saturday night I had my usual pre-race dinner of cheese-less pizza from Domino’s and woke up feeling super excited on Sunday. I wore an old pair of yoga pants to the start and a jacket that I could throw off and wore my usual racing clothes which is a long sleeve shirt and shorts with compression socks. I wear this for every race unless it’s warmer than 40 degrees. Let’s just say, shorts were a bad idea. It took me half of the race to be able to regain feeling in them because the windchill was so cold!

photo 1(1)

The 6.5 miles in Central Park went by pretty fast and before I knew it I was running through an empty Times Square. Definitely the coolest part of the race!

photo 2(2)

My left foot started to hurt on the top so I stopped a few times to stretch but really surprised myself at how I pushed through. I never really felt out of breath or like I was working SUPER hard, which means I know I have a PR in me this spring. At mile 11, I felt like I had just started. No fatigue in my legs and pure adrenaline. I was able to pick up the pace and while I didn’t track my pace on my phone, I think I had a negative split. Running through the battery park tunnel was a little scary but cool and before I knew it there was 800 meters to go. Then 400. Then… “WHERE THE F*&K IS THE FINISH LINE?!?!?!”

photo

This was 20 seconds after crossing the finish line, hence why face is a salt covered balloon. Does anyone else get puffy after a race?

photo 4

Just 3 minutes slower than my PR from Staten Island! I think I definitely have a sub 2:20 in me this spring!

It was absolutely freezing so they gave us heat-sheets but I had to find Brenda and Eddie who had a bag of warm clothes for me and that took about 20 minutes. We then had to try to find a subway (the race ended in the financial district so it’s a confusing area) and make our way to meet my co-worker and her boyfriend for my celebration brunch! We went to Philip Marie in the West Village that I randomly picked from Open Table. It ended up being AMAZING! A super fun atmosphere with good music and cheap for NYC brunch prices. Our waiter was hilarious and the food was awesome. I had the “lumberjack” which when ordering it, I felt pretty badass. It had eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, toast and the #1 thing I actually wanted: chocolate chip pancakes. photo 5

Brunch was a blast and the perfect way to celebrate my race! I went right home after to take a hot shower and then the pain started to set in. Walking down the stairs of the subway were pretty awful, but once I was home every muscle in my leg ached and I spent the rest of the day in my fluffy robe in bed. It was pretty much perfect. I’m never hungry the day of my race so I didn’t feel like eating anything after brunch, but I finally had an amazing bowl of everything I was craving for dinner that night. Strawberry frosted shredded wheat, bananas, raspberry jam, peanut butter and almond milk. I LOVE when the shredded wheat is partially crunchy, partially soggy. photo 1

John had been at his moms house for the weekend to visit since it was the only time this month he had to go, so when he got home around 11 on Sunday night he woke me up with a bunch of kisses…and one of his moms AMAZING brownies, even better 😉 They are literally heaven and there is no time to snap a pic when they are in front of me.

Monday was a little brutal since I had to be up to teach my 6:30 class in Brooklyn. I firmly believe in teaching all my classes on the bike and participating… I have been to classes where the teacher is barely on the bike and it makes my motivation go out the window. Suffer with me. So I announced that I had done the half the day before (less than 24 hours before, actually!) and that I wouldn’t be going as hard as I usually do. The bike actually wasn’t bad at all until we stood up in position 2. Oh, hi muscles. I almost collapsed. But afterwards it definitely helped to loosen me up, along with my 30 minute class Monday night. And my hour class Tuesday morning. I was definitely toasted by Tuesday morning! I haven’t worked out since and my legs are back to normal, so I will be getting back out there tomorrow for another long run for my next upcoming half in 3 weeks!

What was the last race you did? Have you ran one yet in 2014? Love that my season is just getting started!
