Deliciousness + A Lot of Spin

How is it already Thursday?! This week has FLOWN by because I have taught Spin every single day since last Friday! It’s been a crazy non-stop week, that’s for sure. I welcomed today’s rest day with open arms and sadly one extremely sore and pained hip and glute 😦 I need to spend a lot of time foam rolling the next few nights before the More/Fitness Half Marathon on Sunday that I’m obviously ill-prepared for. Brenda and I ran for 1 hour and 25 minutes last Sunday before my spin class and I was seriously dead the last 15 minutes. Where am I supposed to fit running in when I’m teaching spin so many mornings?! So many things are up in the air right now and I’m hoping to have it figured out by next month and hopefully that includes a bigΒ change. πŸ™‚

Backing up to last weekend because it was so awesome, on Sunday after my long run and Spin class, I met up with my good friend Alyse and her awesome roommate and other friends that I love for a belated birthday brunch. Alyse is the sweetest! She took me to ABV which has my favorite eggs benedict in the world and amazing iced coffee; pretty much my two favorites.Β photo 1

The hash browns take it to a whole new level. A whole new level of caloric insanity, I’m sure πŸ˜‰

After brunch we stopped by Dough Loco, a doughnut joint that Alyse had told us about that we had to stop at. No one else really had room for a doughnut the size of their head except me, and I’ll blame that on the fact that I did almost 3 hours of cardio before hand. So, a blueberry doughnut was part of my refueling, natch.Β photo 2

We hung out at Alyse’s apartment for awhile before John and I split to hang out down in the East Village for awhile before his belated birthday dinner. We went to Brindle Room because it’s John’s favorite and the food is so delicious. We had beer battered pork belly for an appetizer and it was ridiculous. So, so good. photo 4

I had the happy hour $5 mussels and fries for dinner because… $5. And they are GOOD. photo 5

Followed up with froyo at a new-to-me place that I am now obsessed with and thankful it’s so far downtown I won’t be running there more than once on the weekends, Yooglers. So many awesome flavors and SO.MANY.TOPPINGS. HELLO, POPTARTS AS A TOPPING!!!!

AND oatmeal squares, aka my favorite cereal but it’s $8 a box here so I never buy it?! Actual heaven.

Included in that weekend was teaching spin Friday morning, Saturday morning, Sunday morning (+8 mile run), then bright and early Monday morning. I also taught Monday night and came home to a great dinner late Monday night. I needed some healthy grub after all the junk from Sunday!Β photo 1 (1)

Sweet potato with goat cheese & raspberry preserves, egg whites, baguette with smashed avocado, and my first attempt at a poached egg that I overcooked by… a lot. It was still good! Followed by a bowl of my current cereal obsession, strawberry frosted mini wheats with vanilla almond milk.Β photo 1 (2)

Tuesday morning after I taught spin, I came home to finally take a glorious nap and try to regain some energy. Around 2 I thought I should probably go try to find some food so I went to a place in my neighborhood I have seen but never had the chance to try. It’s basically a cafe with all kinds of salad, sandwiches, etc and it’s directly across from Columbia hospital. The food is SO fresh and much more affordable than places in midtown! I got a turkey sandwich on this delicious tomato foccacia bread and a huge feta salad.Β photo 4 (1)

So good.

And my healthy dessert I’ve been having every night this week with no guilt:Β photo 4 (2)Β Even if you don’t have an allergy to dairy, these are worth eating. So Delicious brand coconut almond bars for 170 calories each, topped with vanilla almond butter. Of course the almond butter is optional but… not really. πŸ˜‰ They have the exact consistency of real ice cream but only 10 grams of sugar which is really good for a dessert. They are a little pricey but worth it if you can’t eat the real deal!

And finally last night, I taught back-to-back spin classes which is only the 2nd time I’ve ever done it. I must say, teaching twice in a day isn’t bad when it’s spread out but back to back is pretty brutal. By the end, I was light headed and was completely depleted of everything!Β photo 2 (3)

I ate a banana right away then a quick protein shake and some Popchips with 1/2 an avocado for dinner. Not even remotely fancy when trying to prepare dinner at 9 PM and SVU is about to start! Did anyone watch last night? I am so happy that guy finally offed himself. He was so creepy.

How has your week been with workouts and food? My sweet tooth has been off the charts lately, woops.

Long run hunger

The day of a long run, I (and other runners) am surprisingly not hungry. I mean I eat because I love to eat, but it’s not the hunger you’d expect after running so long. For me it’s the day after. Yesterday during my horrible 35 minutes on the elliptical, I got hungry. Like, stomach was sick I was so hungry. That never happens to me during a workout! Luckily my meals all day were packed with protein and fat to keep me full.

My salad from Whole Foods kept me full for about half an hour last night, when my stomach started growling again! That salad was packed with whole grains and protein, but I guess not enough. I portioned out a coffee mug of Kashi go lean high protein twigs with cinnamon + almond milk, banana and a spoon of PB. Then I was fine!

I went to bed at 10:30 and never heard a peep until 7:30 this morning. Um woops, totally forgot to set my alarm last night! 😦 Sorry Caitlin, I know you look forward to my sweat and bitching to Jillian Michaels at 6 AM.

I also had planned to run 5 miles after, so I thought maybe I’d do it after work. That never happens. If I work out at night, it’s a spin class. Runs just don’t happen for me after working for 10 hours. I’m not sure it’s a bad thing I missed it because my legs still hurt so bad from the 9 miler Sunday, plus the elliptical/ squats yesterday. Today my legs needed rest, but I did walk about 1.5 miles after work to go tanning πŸ™‚

Okay, the good stuff. I grabbed a packet of Vega protein powder at Whole Foods last night before committing to a tub since it’s pricey. I got vanilla chai flavor and whipped up a little smoothie bowl this morning. In the mix:

1/2 pouch Vega Vanilla Chai
Frozen peaches
Banana
1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk

Topped with 1/4 cup Kashi (and PB after the pic). SO good! I was full and felt energized for over 5 hours. It looks like a green monster, but I didn’t add spinach- the powder is a green color. I’m really loving the taste of this.

I sipped on an iced coffee with soy + water all day πŸ™‚

Lunch time I had to run errands and grabbed a salad on my way. I fell asleep forgetting to make lunch for today which bums me out, I hate spending money on lunches out! My salad had romaine + cucumber + beets + chickpeas + jalapenos + grilled chicken + avocado + balsamic + sea salt. They also give you a small little multi-grain roll with the salads, yay for carbs!

Snacks: greek yog + strawberries + kashi twigs + PB. So repetitive, but I am on a greek yogurt kick this week. It’s so effective at keeping you full!

Also, a Clif mountain trail mojo bar. I haven’t had one in so long and they are majorly yummy.

I was starving when I got home, so I munched on orange pepper slices and grape tomatoes with hummus while I made an egg white omelet with broccoli and soy cheese, topped with organic ketchup. I LOVE having veggie filled omelets for dinner! No picture because I practically ate it out of the frying pan πŸ™‚

Goal tonight is to be in bed by 10:30 again. I am going to make my second attempt at overnight oats since tomorrow is going to be in the 50’s and it’s FEBRUARY 1st! So, that’s a little warm for warm oatmeal. We’ll see how this batch turns out!

weekend re-cap

Happy (belated) Halloween! I dressed up as Rachel Zoe for work yesterday & for Caitlin’s party Saturday. I didn’t have to spend a dime since fur vests and huge sunglasses are staples in my wardrobe πŸ™‚ This weekend was fun and a little bizarre to have a snow storm in October! Back track to Friday… I’ll let the pics do the talking!

baby food as a snack? delish.
biggest pear ever. not pictured: peanut butter (duh)
I look horrible but had to post it because it looks like "fart" is behind John (it said earthlings?).
5 Napkin Burger date- veggie burger on multi-grain w/ extra pickles & sweet pot fries! ❀
all bundled up for pumpkin froyo at 16 handles!

It was a pretty wild (and indulgent!) Friday night and we were in bed by 11. We slept until noon Saturday which I haven’t done in years, and woke up to a white out snow storm! I love snow especially now that I don’t have to drive in it. I walked to the grocery store to get breakfast ingredients which included eggs, fat-free reddi whip, pumpkin and LIFE CEREAL! It’s one of my favorites, it was on sale and I haven’t had it in at least a year (name brand cereal is very expensive in nyc!). I made John whole wheat french toast and some pumpkin oatmeal protein pancakes with warm diced apples for me πŸ™‚

With plenty of fat-free reddi whip

We watched a marathon of Arrested Development and spent the whole day cuddling while it snowed πŸ™‚ You can work up quite the appetite being lazy, so I had a huge bowl of Life cereal with a banana and peanut butter.

Slept some more, then got ready to head to Caitlin’s halloween party! She had an amazing spread of mini carrot cake cupcakes, chips, hummus & veggies and CAKE POPS DIPPED IN PEANUT BUTTER CHIPS!

Rachel Zoe!

my sexy lumberjack girlfriend
my 3 favs!

We drank lots of wine and decided not to go out in the snow storm. John and I picked up a piece of pizza on the way home thanks to the alcohol, and it was amazing! Not for my waistline, but whatever.

drrrrrrrunk pizza

I slept a whopping 3 hours before I was wide awake and watched Fashion Hunters on Bravo… Love that show! I decided to get grocery shopping out of the way and walk off some of the alcohol. I got off at 116th st and on my walk got invited to breakfast with Caitlin and her friends, so I went on down to 51st and had a delish $3.50 breakfast at Galaxy. I had egg whites, 7 grain toast & potatoes. Aka perfect hangover food!

I spent the rest of Sunday walking around the Upper West Side and ended the day with a coffee date with John at Bourbon Coffee on 14th Street. If you live in NYC or visit, try to go there. They made my pumpkin spice latte with REAL pumpkin instead of gross sugary syrup! They also have the most amazing dessert called a “Jedhi bar” which is a layered cookie bar of graham cracker, dark chocolate, coconut and coffee/cocoa powder. We get it every time and share it. My phone had died at this point since I walked all day, so no pic.

Yesterday morning I woke up feeling super stuffy, so I made a big green monster smoothie with some egg whites for breakfast.

Due to the snow storm Saturday, the power, internet and HEAT was out at work. Apparently Jersey got a lot more snow than NYC. Yet we still stayed doing absolutely nothing for 7 hours. Luckily I had snacks but I wasn’t able to eat my oatmeal for lunch because we had no hot water or microwave. I had a big apple with peanut butter, and a greek yogurt mixed with PB2, fiber 1, a banana and peanut butter. AKA not enough food for me.

We ended up finally leaving at 4 instead of 6, and Caitlin and I had BIG plans of hitting the gym… but our growling stomachs got the best of us. Not to mention we’re both fighting a cold courtesy of hangovers and freezing cold temperatures. We were starving for chinese, so we found a place in her neighborhood for some take out and headed back to her place to watch Sex and the City and chow. I learned my lesson with the fried chinese I had upstate, so I got steamed chicken with steamed broccoli with absolutely no oil, and a side of steamed vegetables.

It was so good and now I know I can eat chinese and have it be healthy!Β We also indulged in some dark chocolate since it was Halloween and all. We went walking around her neighborhood and I continued on a stroll up the Upper West Side and got to enjoy some costumes. I walked a lot Sunday and Monday but it was my only real exercise. Obviously this weekend was super indulgent and void of vegetables, so I was happy to hop back on the running train this morning!

Sorry for the crazy long post, I have to stop being so busy shoveling food in my mouth on weekends and make time to blog! πŸ˜‰
