New York Rangers + Balls

Today is going to be a 2 post kinda day because I have some words about The Biggest Loser’s winner. I want that to be a totally separate post, so this one is to show my super fun night last night at my first New York Rangers hockey game! I bought tickets to it for John and I for our anniversary and the game was last night. This was my first Rangers game and first time ever at MSG which is just crazy huge and awesome inside. Also, everyone was REALLY friendly. I was scared. That is not normal in New York 😉

Walking to our section and I yelled out "Holy Shit"

I suck at pictures but this was the view from our seats. Really not bad for being up high!

Hockey is pretty cool but let’s be real, I was bored out of my mind by the 2nd quarter? Inning? What the heck is it even called in hockey? I started to make John take selfies with me and although he looks happy he was really annoyed with me. 🙂

And best of all, 2 of my favorite people in the world were sitting just 2 rows behind us and since the seats beside us were empty, they came down to party. No picture of Joyce (why didn’t we do this!) but Sam is the coolest girl ever.

They went to the gift shop to get me this bunny! They are the greatest. Please excuse my extremely puffy face as I woke up from a nap about 20 minutes before I had to be there and I had an extremely painful dentist appointment Monday night. Also, that coat is very unflattering but it keeps me warm so I choose to look like a snowman.

John and I were starving after the game so we had a late night date at The Meatball Shop. As usual, it was delicious and I couldn’t finish it all. They give you a TON of vegetables when you order the “kitchen sink” salad and the balls are really filling. I started with a market salad which had romaine, kale, fried shallots, sprinkled parm cheese and shallot vinaigrette.

Then I had the special balls of the night which were buffalo chicken in blue cheese. Also known as my favorite thing in the world. Next time I’d ask for the sauce on the side because this was WAY too much blue cheese, even for me.

The stuff at the top right did not get eaten nor did the carrot salad. I wasn’t feelin’ it at all. John had regular balls and the most amazing mashed potatoes. Ever. I took a few bites and they were so creamy I could have died. I’m sure there was at least 3 pounds of butter in them, natch.

Friggin’ comfort food at it’s finest. I’m so ready for this fat winter to be over! I seriously

Have you ever been to a NHL hockey game? MSG?

What’s your favorite (not so healthy) comfort food?

Anniversary (& a look at my journey in pics!)

Yesterday was me and John’s 8 year anniversary! We dated for almost a month before making it “official” which was hilarious that I tried to play hard-to-get with an older dude. Don’t worry, it was legal! 😉 I was almost 18 and he was 24 when we met but as it goes, men never act their age. It doesn’t seem like it’s been 8 years AT ALL because I still remember every memory from the beginning on like it was yesterday.

Last night he surprised me with a date filled with my favorite things: pizza, coffee and dessert. We started out at Motorino which is a fancier pizza place I’ve wanted to try for awhile, but with no reservations and a VERY small interior it proves to be hard to get in. We lucked out and got seated right away and the food was absolutely amazing! I started with their special appetizer for the night which was baby Brussels sprouts sauteed with olive oil, honey, smoked pancetta and a sprinkle of pecorino. UNREAL.

I had the marinara pizza since it has no cheese and John had the meatball pizza. Sorry for the awful pics, I didn’t want to use my flash since your table is touching the table next to you and I didn’t want to be annoying haha

We then headed to one of my favorite coffee shops called The Bean. We got some coffees, and John pulled out 2 slices of carrot cake (my favorite!!) that he had gotten earlier after googling “best carrot cake in NYC”. He got it from Amy’s Bread, and it was definitely delicious. SO RICH that I only took about 3 bites before having to pull the plug. The rest is in the fridge for dessert tonight and probably tomorrow!

It was such a perfect night totally tailored for me 🙂 We really don’t buy each other gifts but rather plan special date nights like this, but I did completely surprise him when I decided to get him a gift that we could both experience. I got him tickets for the New York Rangers, his favorite hockey team! They are expensive so he’s only been to one game and I’ve never been, but we had a cheap Christmas so I saved a little and splurged. We’re going early next month and I’m stoked!

Since this blog also serves as my own personal journal type thing, I wanted to post pictures from all throughout my relationship even though it doesn’t fit the theme of my blog (food/fitness). Then I realized, these pictures DO fit the theme because you can see how much weight I’ve lost along the way! It’s been a long journey with LOTS of ups and downs, but how lucky am I that I found the perfect partner who loves me no matter how much I weigh 🙂 Feel free to exit now, regular fitness posts will resume tomorrow!

Those above 3 pictures from our 3rd vacation together in Ocean, MD, I had lost almost 20 pounds before we went. I just followed Weight Watchers for a few weeks but of course put it all back on and then some once we got back.

Shortly after we moved into our 2nd apartment. I had gained all the weight back I had lost in the summer. It's so crazy for me to see this because at this point I don't even remember being this big!

I have basically no pictures of us during 2009… it was a super hard year for us and for me in general! That summer was when I took charge of my health and by spring 2010…

Thanks for coming down memory lane with me!

What is your best anniversary story?

Snow!

FINALLY NYC got snow! I don’t like winter but since it’s not an option, it better at least be snowy if it’s going to be cold.

Friday I was still feeling really drained so I went home from work and went right to bed. I watched TV for awhile but finally slept from 9 to 10 the next morning! I woke up feeling awake and ready to get a good run in. It had snowed all night and I have always wanted to run in the snow 🙂 I hit up Central Park for a few miles, sans music (also a 1st for me) and it was amazing to hear the silence that snow brings. Kids were sledding and runners were running, but snow really quiets a city down. I love it!

5 miles later, I met up with Caitlin and some of her friends for brunch at Galaxy Diner where I had coffee, egg whites, 7-grain toast & homefries. For $5. Yum.

Still in my Lululemon jacket, vest, tights, sneakers and headband, I walked all over the city with them for close to 5 hours! It was FREEZING, but so fun since I haven’t had a day like that in too long. Best part: walking through the tunnel that goes from East 66th to West 66th through the park on a very narrow, snow-filled path. We felt like kids, especially since the adventure ended at 16 Handles for frozen yogurt. It was beyond refreshing to have a day filled with no responsibilities 🙂

I took the hottest shower of my life and then it was time for a date with my love! He took me to a cozy cafe in Chelsea called Grey Dog Cafe. Hipster vibe without the pretentious feel, you order your food at a counter, seat yourself and have your food brought out to you by a guy yelling your name. After a 5 mile run and 4 hours of walking, I was hungry!

I went back and forth between a few choices, but I settled on the grey dog turkey club sandwich on 9 grain bread, without bacon, mayo or cheese. I added avocado because I am going through a huge avocado phase right now, and it’s more flavorful (not to mention healthier than bacon or mayo). With sweet potato fries on the side, this was a perfect, huge meal for my huge runners appetite 🙂

The sandwich was incredible. So fresh and healthy tasting, and the sweet potato fries added that level of comfort that is craved on a cold, snowy night. For dessert John had a huge piece of apple cobbler with homemade whipped cream, and I had a spicy hot chocolate. Perfect date night in my book!

Sunday I had to work, but afterwards met up for dinner with my old boss from upstate NY and another former co-worker who were visiting. We had delicious salads and pizza at Angelo’s Pizza in midtown east and caught up on the last almost year of each others lives. She is like a second mom to me 🙂

After dinner, I went home and finally watched Bridesmaids! I basically cried for most of the movie because it is the exact friendship that my best friend Brenda and I have! The movie was hystarical just like everyone had said.

Only downfall of that snow run: I’m having major knee pain 😦 My left knee is really hurting again. I went for a slow, hilly 2.5 mile run this morning and went to spin tonight, but I’m not running tomorrow. I might just cross-train this week and do some Jillian because I cannot risk hurting it more! Boo 😦

How was your weekend? Eat anything yummy? Any good workouts?
