Hey guys! How was your Memorial Day weekend? It’s SO crazy to think that I’ve already been at my ‘new‘ job for a year now, and that this is my second Memorial Day weekend actually NOT working and getting to enjoy 3 days off.. still SO thankful for leaving retail 🙂
Friday night I was so exhausted for kind of no reason, so John and I went to dinner right after work and then fell asleep pretty early watching Louie C.K. Wild party animals. Saturday morning started with breakfast at the diner then we spent the day with Brenda and the baby! John went to a concert Saturday night so I had a wild night on the couch with some cheese-less Domino’s and a marathon of one of my all-time favorite series, Weeds. I am beyond obsessed with Mary Louise Parker and LOVE Andy! Any other Weeds fans? And no- I do not smoke pot! Just love the whole feel of the show.
Sunday morning I made my awesome breakfast bagels for John and I. I cook pretty dang good eggs and bacon if I do say so myself. Even John loves them, which is saying a lot. Mine was a whole wheat everything bagel with a jalapeno egg white omelet folded up, bacon, and a runny egg. PERFECT!
Followed by a healthier lunch of a super green juice with chia seeds. This had all organic kale, chard, spinach, ginger, green apple, cucumber and then topped with chia seeds. My seasonal allergies are absolutely horrible this year and the worst part is that they completely exhaust me. I constantly feel like I just ran a marathon this time of the year.. it’s awful. So trying to add more greens in hopes of feeling a little more alive.
After walking around Central Park we ended up downtown having dinner at this awesome BBQ joint- Mighty Quinn’s. Absolutely deeeelicious and perfect for a holiday weekend when we have nowhere to cook out (boo, NYC).
Yesterday morning I slept in, enjoyed some oatmeal and coffee then headed off to a super intense CYC class. So it’s a 45 minute class and I burn between 375 (slacking off) and close to 500. Keep in mind that 4 songs worth are spent barely peddling and using weights for arms- so it’s a REALLY good burn and even though the weights are light (range from 1-5 lbs) my arms are always sore.
After class I headed to Brenda’s to kick it with my favorite little gals. I love this baby sooo much!
And ended the holiday weekend with a little bit of froyo, a lot of cookie dough pieces. YOLO.
Wow. Last week really did me in. Most amount of classes I’ve ever taught in a week- 11. I am still feeling it, as I missed my long run Sunday morning from exhaustion anddd missed it again yesterday morning when I meant to make it up. Ugh. Marathon training is really not even remotely fun for me right now. I haven’t felt even a little excited about it and that makes me sad. But I love teaching a ton, and it’s a source of my income so it is more important than training to run 26.2 miles. Definitely never running a 2nd marathon. I love half’s but this full nonsense is just too time consuming! I NEED SLEEP. (and some strength training would be nice too)
This is how my week broke down.
Sunday July 6th: Taught my 9:00 AM class. Lifted a few weights right before class then walked around all day with heavy ass bags of groceries and other random errands. It was a very active day outside of my normal workout which left me really tired which is actually really sad 🙂 Goes to show you that just because you do 1-3 hours of cardio a day, if you sit at a desk the rest of the time (like me) then some of those benefits are negated.
Monday July 7th: Taught my 6:30 AM class in Brooklyn. Worked all day, then subbed 2 back-to-back classes at 6 and 7 PM. These classes demand high energy because of who I sub for, so I rode about 50 miles or more this day. I also did these exact 3 classes the Monday before and in just a week’s time it’s crazy to feel that I was less tired than the week before. Our bodies adapt so fast! I had this delicious bar right before the 2 classes to fuel up and it tastes like a macaroon. Mmmm.
Got home, ate avocado toast and my new nightly snack that is sometimes actually dinner because I get home late.
2% Fage strawberry yogurt, a couple mini chocolate chips and a few animal crackers. There is something so amazing about this yogurt. Please try it if you haven’t. Also please try to un-see how pasty white I am right now.
Tuesday July 8th: Wanted to get in a few miles Tuesday morning but OBVIOUSLY that didn’t happen. I slept in and felt like I was hit by a train. Worked all day then taught my 7:00 PM class. Only day that I only had 1 class. Pinkberry for dinner, yaaaaaaaaaaas.
Wednesday July 9th: Taught my 6:00 AM class which is always beyond rough to get up for, since I don’t get home til around 9 or after on Tuesday nights. Worked all day, then subbed for my girl Nicole at 6:00 PM. This is when my left hip and foot started to hurt during class, so I tried to scale back as much as I could.
Thursday July 10th: My last Thursday subbing the 7:00 AM class and I am really going to miss it! Worked all day, then subbed another 6:00 PM class. I taught in my sneakers instead of my spin shoes for both of these classes and it helped my foot and hip feel a lot better. I learned at the conference in Miami that stress fractures can happen to our feet in spin if the cleats on the spin shoes are too far forward and I think this is the case on mine. The guy actually said something like 80% of people’s cleats are put too far forward! So the sneakers took off some pressure from my toes so I was able to go pretty hard Thursday morning. Thursday night I taught 3 songs off the bike for my first time (it was both awkward and glorious) and welcomed Friday ready to finish my last 2 classes.
Friday July 11th- Taught my 6:30 AM class in Brooklyn. Love my Friday class. We’re so pumped for the weekend and everyone works hard! I was feeling pretty good for having 9 classes under me already. Worked all day, then subbed the 6 PM class that I will be subbing for the rest of summer! I love it and it really helps people get ready for the weekend.
I then had to work overtime Saturday morning where I was a miserably exhausted mess 🙂
My weeks won’t be like that often and at least right now while I need to be running too, my body can’t handle that amount of high-mileage cycling. It’s much different than high-mileage running of course, but it has it’s cons as well. Mainly the fact that I have no real recovery time so I feel too sore and achey to push myself in my classes later in the week. I’m good at faking it on the bike (like any good instructor 😉 ) but the truth is the energy an instructor has while they are also pushing themselves and struggling along with the class is different. I’m still woo-ing, and so encouraging to the classes- off the bike, plus I’m now not afraid to sing along to my songs (i feel bad for my classes haha) but they watch your every move on the bike and it really makes a difference in how hard they work. I’m just not comfortable teaching off the bike (yet? ever? I’m not sure) so I’m figuring out what works for me. If I’m teaching 11 classes in a 5 day span, they can’t all be my own workout too. I HAVE to scale my own intensity back or my burn out is going to happen and it’s my job now to not get burnt out! I do love that this is such a learning process, and I would truly love to be a full time instructor/trainer so I need all the advice I can get from fellow instructors- and those of you who take spin!! Tell me what you love and what bugs you about an instructor!! My #1 thing- I know I used to hate when instructors would come up close to me and touch my resistance knob- hello what if that person has an injury that they didn’t want to announce to the class?!- and I think that motivating and pushing from up front is more effective overall. That’s my opinion, and I’ve asked my classes before if they like that and 99% of them have said they hate when an instructor doesn’t ride with them and when they get all up in their business.
This past Sunday I taught in the morning and then Brenda and I went to the Brooklyn Bridge Park to lay out in the sun. I got REAL burnt like an idiot- it was cloudy and we were too afraid of rain to go out to the beach- but it was nice to just lay out and talk and laugh after a long week! I finished my Sunday with a chicken pita, froyo and bed at 8:30. Gloooorious.

Thank you for all the love and support on yesterday’s post about my new job! I am truly so excited to start my new chapter (I sound like a broken record at this point ha) and I can guarantee you are going to be super annoyed with my posts about my outfits 😉

So last week at this time I was in Binghamton for a long weekend of relaxing, food, family, friends and racing! The Binghamton Bride Run 1/2 Marathon was my first half marathon ever last year, and I think it may be one of my favorites. The route is perfectly challenging and good for a PR, without the crazy overcrowding of NYC races. Plus I can just drive to the start versus getting on the subway early or taking a cab which is muchhhh less stressful! Once I arrived on Thursday, I had Enterprise pick me up at the bus station (pretty sweet perk when renting a car through them), grabbed an iced soy latte and met my brother for lunch at my favorite diner, Broadway Diner. As usual, I had to have the greek chicken salad with honey mustard on the side.
Later on I made my mom, brother and I an awesome healthy meal since I knew the rest of the weekend would be indulgent as all get out. Baked teriyaki chicken, sauteed mushrooms in coconut oil, and roasted sweet potatoes topped with coconut almond butter. Why is cooking at someone else’s house so much better? Answer: because your mom does the dishes. 😉
Friday morning I woke up and went for a 4 mile run in absolutely gorgeous weather. My hometown is really beautiful on the 40-some days of sunshine we actually get a year!
My brother and I went to another one of my favorite cafe’s called Corbin’s for brunch. It’s one of the healthiest restaurants in the area and not one that many people know about even living there. I had eggs with pumpernickel homemade toast, bacon and homefries (nothing is cooked in oil even for a calorie savings) and we shared an order of buckwheat banana pancakes with sugar-free syrup. Absolutely delicious and great way to begin carb-loading!
I did some shopping at TJ Maxx then headed to my hair appointment. This is my favorite part of being upstate is getting my hair done by my friend Sherette at Friends & Co. She is so ridiculously talented and I swear my hair looks better and better each time. We spend hours talking and laughing with the 2 other stylists (Patrick and Keith, both AMAZING as well!) and I leave feeling wonderful every time. My perfect blonde hair being just a perk of going!
Later on Friday night my brother and I took my mom to an early mother’s day dinner at her favorite restaurant Little Venice, a Binghamton staple. Truly the best italian restaurant you’ll ever go to, mark my words. Drew and I split their bbq baked chicken wings (so much better than fried) and THE BEST PIZZA IN THE WORLD. I had never had their pizza before but since I needed to carb up and pasta kills my stomach, we gave their pizza a whirl. This was the margarita pizza and the little bits of fresh mozzerella were so easy to pick right off for me. The sauce and the dough was just magnificent.
A few hours after digesting, I picked up Brenda who had just got into town and we went out with our friend Lisa to downtown Binghamton. Back in the good old days, we used to party every weekend at these bars and were the life of the party. Turns out at 26 years old, we were the oldest people there besides a group of 45 year old men from out of town who were there for something to do with golf. We had a drink, took a picture, and went to Denny’s. So old. (Side note: we had blueberry pancake puppies and they are life changing. Please don’t judge.)
Saturday morning I met up with my high-school health teacher who is one of the most amazing people I’ve ever known in my life. We had breakfast at Broadway (of course) and spent a good chunk of time catching up on each others lives. So great to have a mentor like him, and I love that he is wildly successful even after retiring. He travels the country giving speeches and lectures from his book, Zen and the Art of Public School Teaching. If you are a teacher, I HIGHLY recommend reading this. Even if you aren’t, the man has such a way with words it’s really incredible.
Brenda and I then headed to get coffee and to the expo to get our race stuff. Then it was off for froyo round 1 where we discussed future business plans that I can’t wait to explore!
I headed down to Pennsylvania to scoop up John and visit with his mom for awhile, then we met back up with Brenda and my brother for pizza at Joey’s in Endicott. This was delicious, but a little too cheesy so once it was scraped off there was basically no sauce left. Next year, I will be carb-loading at Little Venice!
…Picked up my friend Amanda and we met my friend Jordan for froyo round 2. Absolutely no shame. Also, I love these people. So much.
Let’s just say I spent all weekend trying to get Brenda to back out of this race. I was SO over it from the moment I woke up Saturday from not getting enough sleep. By the time I knew I was only getting 4 hours of sleep before the race as well, I wanted to scream. I woke up Sunday pretty miserable but sucked it up of course. We had no time for coffee but it ended up being fine somehow. We parked a few blocks from the start and met up with our friend Adrienne who we ended up running with the whole time which was such a life saver. Having the added motivation and person to talk to really helped us and it went a lot smoother than I thought it would. The hills from last year seemed like nothing this year, but by the time we got to mile 10 we had only stopped once and Brenda and Adrienne were ready to kick it into gear. Unfortunately, this is always where I fall short. I am TERRIBLE at picking it up for the end of a race. In spin class, hell yeah I can find that energy and bring it home- probably because that’s what I get paid to do. But in a race, I’m terrible. Once we passed mile 11 I was really lagging behind them, so I told them to go because Brenda had a HUGE PR if she kept up with Adrienne. I felt so terrible that last mile and a half, but instead of walking I just slowed down a ton and this guy and I fed off each other to push one another to the finish. I wish I got his name because he really saved me and I think I did the same for him! Once I saw my brother and John at the finish, I booked it and ended up finishing in 2:22:31, only a minute off my PR!! And Brenda? She finished in 2:19, giving her an 11 MINUTE PR FROM LAST YEAR! I am so, so, SO proud of her!!
The exhaustion hit me like a ton of bricks after this one from the lack of sleep for multiple nights before, and the culmination of all the emotions you go through during a big life change. Drew and John took me to Friendly’s (I have been craving this for literally 4 years) so I could eat every single thing I wanted to at that moment: french toast, french fries with honey mustard, runny eggs and bacon.
Luckily post-race I am too sick to eat much so I just had a few bites of each thing and was good to go. Except for the fries… those I dominated. Drew and John had banana fosters pancakes while laughing about how stupid it is to run a half marathon. LOL love my support team 😉
Enter in a nap followed by a little more food that my stomach wasn’t accepting. Long bus ride home with terrible anxiety (does anyone else ever have anxiety after a long workout? Sometimes a lot of cardio does that to me but I also turn into a baby when I’m overtired) and having to wake up 4 hours after I got in to teach spin. I came right back to my apartment and crashed for the day. Felt reeeeal good.

Warning: random blabberings ahead. Only way to describe my need for a vacation is just, NEED. This week did me in on all fronts and I am beyond exhausted. I was expecting some good news on Friday and when it got postponed, I had a breakdown. A private one, until I texted my brother who always makes me laugh hysterically. Not only did he make me crack up, but he also Venmo’d me a very specific amount of money to get some froyo to make me feel better.
So sweet, right? It cheered me up a ton but on my way to Orange Leaf, I got sucked into Pinkberry. The horror. I haven’t had Pinkberry since I first moved to NYC over 3 years ago, because it just wasn’t close to as good as the others and not to mention it’s not self-serve. This was a new location and the signs for the chocolate chip cookie drew me in. I planned to just get a taste but the flavor was SO good. I may have to incorporate them back into my froyo rotation.
Waffle cookie, cookie dough, almond roca (DELICIOUS), coconut flakes and thin mint crushed cookies made this the best bowl of froyo of my week. I’m such a fro-hoe.
ANYWAYS- about those vacations I need. This is the best year ever because I am going to Costa Rica in August and Mexico in November and neither trip cost me an ounce of debt because I had saved up for them both. But I started thinking that I really needed to get away before August. Like, REALLY NEED TO. I want to rip my hair out on a daily basis thanks to stress and since it doesn’t seem to be getting warm here anytime soon for me to take a quick hour trip to the beach, I started to do some research. Every year at the end of May, there is a conference held for Spinning in Miami, the WSSC Conference where you can earn the points needed to keep you a certified Spin instructor. I started thinking that hey, Brenda and I could go down for 1 day of the conference and then stay another day for the beach and maybe we both wouldn’t go completely crazy in the next few weeks? She agreed, and my co-worker/friend Sharde also decided that she will tag along, but without the spin part. So, a mini girls vacation in a manageable distance of time was born.
Those are the classes that Brenda and I are signed up to do at the conference. I am looking so forward to learning how to become a better instructor! Equally as excited to lay on the beach and finally see Miami! What am I not looking forward to? Flying. I haven’t flown in 5 years and I am PETRIFIED to say the least. Any tips or fellow scaredy cats out there? I’m gonna need some Xanax.
Just to prove that I still do eat my veggies, I have to share with you the salad that I am completely obsessed with that I need to recreate on my own because I can’t keep spending $13 on lunch every day.
Chop’t is officially the best salad joint in the city. Expensive as hell, yes, but the salads are gigantic and the mixes are the bomb. I get the cobb with grilled chicken, chopped up bacon, avocado, blue cheese, tomatoes, romaine, red onion and I sub the hard boiled egg for roasted broccoli. They give you a couple of thin pieces of flabread and I get the tex-mex ranch dressing on the side to dip. The way they chop it all up together (hence the name) makes every bite so flavorful!
I have been so great about mindful eating the last few months, but I definitely let it slip a little this week and honestly? It’s okay! This will happen. The thing I feel the best about is that it isn’t making me frantically open up the MyFitnessPal app and start obsessively counting calories again. I actually don’t think I ever even did a post on how I stopped because I didn’t want to jinx myself, haha. I used it for 4 years and would recommend it to ANYONE to assist in your weight loss journey, or even weight gain if that’s what your goal is. But I needed to know that I could maintain my weight on my own and start to build a better relationship with food, and I did it. And of course there is going to be setbacks here and there because this is it. For life. I’m in it forever, and that means failures. I’m dragging my tired ass to Trader Joe’s after work tonight to get some healthies for the next few days until I go out of town to Binghamton. And then after my half marathon next weekend, I am going to eat either a burger or chicken wings and then die. And then come back to vegetables. Sounds good. Give me a week.
Other random things? I haven’t strength trained since January and my glutes and hip are suffering. I also run once a week if that and I really miss it. Teaching spin 4 early mornings a week (and then going into work until 7 PM or later) is making running next to impossible to fit in, but at least it’s so much fun to teach. I do miss the serenity that a lone morning run brings you. If only there were more hours in a day. Once I get my life figured out here (hopefully THIS WEEK) I will have to make more of an effort to strength train though before I need a hip replacement before I’m 30.
What was your last vacation? I haven’t taken an actual vacation in almost 4 years!
Half Marathon #5 was completed this past Sunday with my best friend Brenda. Truthfully, it was the worst race I can ever remember running. It was unexpectedly hot and we were dehydrated and completely over it from the start. We finished 4 minutes slower than our first half together last year (and 12 minutes slower than my PR), but this one included multiple walk breaks and about a 5 minute stop at the port-a-potties at mile 5, so we are still in much better shape than last year! At the end of the day, all that really matters is that we got out there and did what we could and we did it together which was automatically a blast.
Stuffed our faces afterwards at brunch with my new post-race ritual of chocolate chip pancakes, eggs and turkey sausage.
Followed by a pedicure that John treated me to. BEST IDEA EVER to get one after a half! The leg massage was so great. I broke my right big toe in half during this race along with worsening the permanent blister below my 2nd toe on the right side, too. It was a pretty painful pedicure to say the least.
I taught spin Monday morning with SO much less soreness than last month’s half! I ended up finishing last weeks training with 99 miles total of running and cycling. Insanity.
My brother came to visit Monday night and stayed with us all day yesterday and John was also off of work from the day. We had a blast. Drew came to my spin class with me Tuesday morning and KILLED it! It was his first spin class ever and of course he beat me in mileage. Boys. Then we went to brunch with John, went back home and laid in my bed all day watching TV and napping. Dinner was Domino’s and POPEYES FRIED CHICKEN because we were just in need of a fat day. We ate super early and took another nap, so on the way to the bus station at 10 PM we stopped for froyo at Orange Leaf where they were selling froyo for $4.15 regardless of the weight of the cup for tax day. We ball hard.
It was a super fun few days and I’m paying for it today in exhaustion and bloat 😉
Did any of you guys run the More/Fitness half last weekend? What did you think if you did or did it in the past? I just can’t pay $80 to run in Central Park again. Not when I run it for free and not when the swag bag is absolutely terrible!
How is it already Thursday?! This week has FLOWN by because I have taught Spin every single day since last Friday! It’s been a crazy non-stop week, that’s for sure. I welcomed today’s rest day with open arms and sadly one extremely sore and pained hip and glute 😦 I need to spend a lot of time foam rolling the next few nights before the More/Fitness Half Marathon on Sunday that I’m obviously ill-prepared for. Brenda and I ran for 1 hour and 25 minutes last Sunday before my spin class and I was seriously dead the last 15 minutes. Where am I supposed to fit running in when I’m teaching spin so many mornings?! So many things are up in the air right now and I’m hoping to have it figured out by next month and hopefully that includes a big change. 🙂
Backing up to last weekend because it was so awesome, on Sunday after my long run and Spin class, I met up with my good friend Alyse and her awesome roommate and other friends that I love for a belated birthday brunch. Alyse is the sweetest! She took me to ABV which has my favorite eggs benedict in the world and amazing iced coffee; pretty much my two favorites.
The hash browns take it to a whole new level. A whole new level of caloric insanity, I’m sure 😉
After brunch we stopped by Dough Loco, a doughnut joint that Alyse had told us about that we had to stop at. No one else really had room for a doughnut the size of their head except me, and I’ll blame that on the fact that I did almost 3 hours of cardio before hand. So, a blueberry doughnut was part of my refueling, natch.
We hung out at Alyse’s apartment for awhile before John and I split to hang out down in the East Village for awhile before his belated birthday dinner. We went to Brindle Room because it’s John’s favorite and the food is so delicious. We had beer battered pork belly for an appetizer and it was ridiculous. So, so good.
I had the happy hour $5 mussels and fries for dinner because… $5. And they are GOOD.
Followed up with froyo at a new-to-me place that I am now obsessed with and thankful it’s so far downtown I won’t be running there more than once on the weekends, Yooglers. So many awesome flavors and SO.MANY.TOPPINGS. HELLO, POPTARTS AS A TOPPING!!!!
AND oatmeal squares, aka my favorite cereal but it’s $8 a box here so I never buy it?! Actual heaven.
Included in that weekend was teaching spin Friday morning, Saturday morning, Sunday morning (+8 mile run), then bright and early Monday morning. I also taught Monday night and came home to a great dinner late Monday night. I needed some healthy grub after all the junk from Sunday!
Sweet potato with goat cheese & raspberry preserves, egg whites, baguette with smashed avocado, and my first attempt at a poached egg that I overcooked by… a lot. It was still good! Followed by a bowl of my current cereal obsession, strawberry frosted mini wheats with vanilla almond milk.
Tuesday morning after I taught spin, I came home to finally take a glorious nap and try to regain some energy. Around 2 I thought I should probably go try to find some food so I went to a place in my neighborhood I have seen but never had the chance to try. It’s basically a cafe with all kinds of salad, sandwiches, etc and it’s directly across from Columbia hospital. The food is SO fresh and much more affordable than places in midtown! I got a turkey sandwich on this delicious tomato foccacia bread and a huge feta salad.
And my healthy dessert I’ve been having every night this week with no guilt: Even if you don’t have an allergy to dairy, these are worth eating. So Delicious brand coconut almond bars for 170 calories each, topped with vanilla almond butter. Of course the almond butter is optional but… not really. 😉 They have the exact consistency of real ice cream but only 10 grams of sugar which is really good for a dessert. They are a little pricey but worth it if you can’t eat the real deal!
And finally last night, I taught back-to-back spin classes which is only the 2nd time I’ve ever done it. I must say, teaching twice in a day isn’t bad when it’s spread out but back to back is pretty brutal. By the end, I was light headed and was completely depleted of everything!
I ate a banana right away then a quick protein shake and some Popchips with 1/2 an avocado for dinner. Not even remotely fancy when trying to prepare dinner at 9 PM and SVU is about to start! Did anyone watch last night? I am so happy that guy finally offed himself. He was so creepy.
How has your week been with workouts and food? My sweet tooth has been off the charts lately, woops.
Happy Saturday! REALLY wish I was outside enjoying the gorgeous weather and not stuck at work. I’m also really over the fact that allergy season has now started, and going from a month of being sick straight into allergies basically feels like I’m just still sick. UGH! I take Zyrtec to ward off some of the symptoms, but it doesn’t seem to be helping much. I read this year will be one of the worst years for allergies in a long time. WHY. Puffy eyes and a dry, flaky nose really just isn’t my best look.
At least this week showed signs of spring. I made it a point to bring actual clothes with me to the gym in the morning even though I’m only in them for the train ride to work and then home. We have REAL ugly uniforms at work (if you know where I work you are probably even more shocked) so I basically never get to wear cute clothes anymore. It sucks and I miss it so much. Speaking of cute clothes, I am a big time hater of jeans but found really great fitting ones at Express. They offer low-rise, mid-rise, and high-rise which is spectacular if you are like me and don’t like the way low-rise jeans fit (more specifically- you don’t like your slight muffin top and butt crack hanging out of your pants). The mid-rise fit is perfect on me and even though I’m 5’7, my height is not at all in my legs so the ankle length fits me like just normal skinny jeans. I don’t have a pic of me in them but they are these. I think they call them a legging because they are stretchy and fit tight but they are definitely heavier like a real jean. Freaking love them and Express jeans have always been my personal favorite! Since I have their credit card, I get coupons all the time and got 4 pairs of those jeans, this top in mint green, and these sunglasses. On top of the coupons, I also had a $40 gift card they sent me for my birthday so I made out super well!
Besides my 2 mile run on Wednesday, no other running this week. Still. I’m telling you, I just can’t find my groove. I taught Spin Monday, Tuesday, Friday morning and this morning so I obviously still got my workouts in but running just keeps taking a back seat. If only I got paid for it 😉 Ate some greatness though, of course.
First of all, how adorable is this new glass portable mason jar from David’s Tea? I’ve been making iced tea with stevia in the early mornings to drink on my way to teach spin so that I’m not drinking so much coffee since having an iced soy latte at work is a non-negotiable. It’s more of a gentle way to wake up, I think!
After a particularly terrible Wednesday, I went to drown my sorrows in froyo at my favorite froyo joint Orange Leaf. They are more expensive than the others, but when you taste it you happily oblige. Plus I had a $3 coupon for my birthday. It was April 2nd and they had eggnog, my absolute favorite flavor of froyo. So that pretty much turned my frown upside down!
Last night John took me to a greek place I’ve wanted to try for a late birthday dinner since he was so sick last weekend. While it was a little pricier and the service totally sucked, the food was outrageously good. I ate more french fries than I care to admit and was extremely sick after but that is 100% my fault. The feta was amazing, the kebobs delicious and the jalapeno hummus with pita bread? Best thing ever.
If you like Greek food, I highly recommend Stix on East 23rd street!

Hi!! This week has been insane for me and to top it off I have been so, so sick. This is the worst cold I’ve had in a couple years and has knocked me on my ass. I’ll do a quick re-cap starting with last weekend and bring you up to speed with what will be on today and/or Monday! 😉
Last Saturday night:
My usual pre-long run dinner (cheese-less chicken and onion Domino’s pizza), except I ate the WHOLE thing because on top of my long runs I now teach 3 spin classes on Sunday’s.
Brenda and I ran a great 8 miles Sunday morning and they felt pretty effortless for how little I’ve been running. Thank you, 1099 spin classes a week.
Followed up with my hour spin class that we had a ton of fun in. I used the same playlist that I posted here because I hadn’t used it in this class yet.
I started to feel sick this day and by Monday it was full throttle terrible sore throat. I stayed home from work but had to teach my 6:30 AM spin class because guess what? No one wants to sub at that hour haha I pushed through and came home to rest all day. My throat got worse and worse but it was my first night teaching at NuYu so I had to go. I drank a couple Emergen-C’s throughout the day and it at least took away the achy feeling and gave me a bit of energy. This was a 45 minute ride and more of a beginner’s class so I took it super easy and it was a great vibe! Here’s the playlist for that.
My throat was on.fire. after teaching even though the room at this gym is small and I didn’t have to scream, so I stopped at 16 Handles for froyo to soothe my throat. Great excuse, right?
Just a little bit to tide me over until I got home and made a healthy dinner full of vitamins to help me out!
I was off from work Tuesday but had to teach at 7:30 AM and I was feeling worse. I ended up feeling better for awhile after my class but that was just the momentary endorphins because by the afternoon I was dead again. I NEVER lose my appetite, and this week I have had to force myself to eat to have enough energy for my classes and to get better. I was in bed all day and night Tuesday with the hopes of feeling better for Wednesday morning because I had VIP tickets to…
Last week I was contacted by one of the producers of the show asking if I could film a few videos of myself saying some scripted lines, one of me working out and either stepping on a scale looking really happy or looking in the mirror proudly! I chose the mirror shot to keep it real since I don’t believe in the scale making you happy! 🙂
We got to sit right in the front row and it was awesome! Despite my coughing fits, it was a really great experience and Dr. Oz is a smart man. He mingled with the crowd more than I expected and I’m in a group shot with him that will be up on the Facebook page next week so I will post it then! So, my videos will either be on TODAY’S 4 PM SHOW (EST) or MONDAY’S. They were unsure of the schedule of shows yesterday and I have not heard back from them. Hopefully they still use me! haha
After the show (we were there for almost 4 hours and hadn’t eaten before) we ran to brunch because we were about to eat our hands. French toast at our favorite little french cafe, Le Grainne Cafe, that we have celebrated great things at!
This is the best french toast IN THE WORLD. It’s made with baguettes so it’s crispy on the outside and has an orange zest to it, topped with almonds and served with thin sliced ham, a couple little potatoes and fruit. I also had a soy iced latte that was so strong and so needed.
Latte = happy Jen. If you watch the show today or Monday, I am in the front row and this is what I wore! The shirt isn’t as dark as this pic shows and John had a red flannel shirt on.
After brunch, I went home to rest and had to head back out to sub the 7:00 PM class. I was the most sick at this point and losing my voice, but ended up having an amazing class. It’s funny how that works! I took it as easy as I could, which really means I was still working too hard. It’s hard to slack off when you have 20 people looking at you for motivation! You know how they say go ahead and workout if your cold is in your head, but don’t if it’s in your chest? Well it’s true. Working out Wednesday night made me feel 100x worse almost immediately after stopping, so I grabbed some Mucinex at CVS on my way home.
Definitely has helped a ton. For $27, it better. I REALLY hate taking medicine and almost never do since there isn’t a cure for the common cold but now that some of my income depends on me being healthy and able to workout I wasn’t playin’ around.
I made it through about 7 hours of work yesterday before I had to call it quits and go home. I was sweating through my clothes and feeling super weak so I molded myself back in my bed and today I’m feeling better. Still sneezing my brains out and coughing, but not as weak. Progress.
So yes, amazing news that I will be on the Dr. Oz show!! I’m sure I will be able to get the clip and post it here as soon as I can! Beware that it’s corny but I’m actually a pretty corny person haha

Man this week… has been rough. Really, really rough. The crazy amounts of snow are just adding to the roughness but emotionally this has been a terrible week for me. At least 50% of it is thanks to PMS, but in the spirit of keeping it real I’m just struggling with a lot of personal issues in my life right now. Some days are better than others but this week it has been one thing after another. Getting out of bed is a part-time job to me right now. I just feel depressed before I’ve even turned off my alarm, unless I’m going to teach a class. I’ve had a migraine that started late yesterday afternoon and hasn’t quit. Add on to that eating like total junk and consuming WAY too much sugar and caffeine and I am a walking ball of irritability. Not my best look, ya’ll. I’m just really fried from all the things in my life that just aren’t bringing me any form of happiness. I’d love to open up about it more but I really can’t, just know I am definitely on the journey to finding what I need to get rid of in my life to be happier. It’s just a lot easier said than done. Especially because I’m not rich or come from a rich family who could support me. Ya feel me?
I was supposed to be leaving tonight to take the bus upstate for the weekend but the road conditions are terrible so I rescheduled for tomorrow morning. I am looking forward to a few days of no work, getting my hair done, seeing my family and my good friend Rachel for her baby shower.
On a happier note, I got to go to the SELF Magazine offices in Times Square on Tuesday night because I was chosen to be a healthy food taste tester! How rad is that? A few of us got to chow down on various different hummuses, low-sodium turkey, crackers, sweet potato fries, and raspberry sorbet, all of which were. If you are a reader of Self, you are probably familiar with their annual healthy food awards issue. It’s my favorite! I love reading it every year because it opens me up to new healthy foods that I probably overlook in the grocery store. I can’t wait to find out the results because the raspberry sorbet I picked is SO delicious, I don’t even have words. I was in the dairy-free taste testing group so everything I ate was devoid of lactose. Great news for my stomach and bowels. TMI.
This week’s workouts have included… teaching one spin class, and no running since Sunday. Pretty much waving my hopes of good spring half marathons goodbye (not really, that’s just the PMS talking 😉 ) My left hip was so tight and painful for 2 days after my last treadmill run though and I couldn’t even make it to 1 mile. At least I’ve eaten froyo twice this week? Ugh.
How do you overcome being way down in the dumps?

Hi loves! I hope your weekends were as fun as mine was. I really made sure to enjoy every minute of it and was able to do almost all of my favorite things with some of my favorite people. No complaints there! Friday night was low key and I was asleep by 10, and then slept until almost 10 AM. Needed it. I went to meet with a woman who owns a cycle/yoga studio to possibly pick up some classes and we ended up chatting for hours! She is awesome and I’m hoping I’ll be able to have some classes there.
John met me afterwards and I was HANGRY. We stopped and had brunch somewhere on the Upper West Side and I had eggs benedict ’cause it sounded real good. And it was.
Followed by lunch dessert, some warm fresh cookies from Insomnia Cookies. Yes, this is a cookie shop that is open until 4:00 AM and serves totally fresh cookies all day and night. Janae, is this your dream? 🙂
John had the bottom huge one which was smores and I had the double chocolate mint and chocolate chunk. I ate less than half of each and gave the rest to John. They are super rich cookies so just a couple of bites is plenty! We went back home for a little bit then headed to the 7:00 hot yoga class. Who are we, going to work out together on a Saturday night?! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. I think it was the hottest vinyasa class I’ve ever taken and we were both drenched. I’m also still sore which is awesome.
Sunday morning I got up hoping to fit in 5 miles before teaching Spin but I overslept (what else is new) and only had time for 1.5 on the treadmill. I’m seriously failing hard at training for my spring half marathons which are starting in 6 weeks. Yikes! Brenda came to take my class which I love so much! She had to help me switch my bike halfway through because my seat kept sliding up (like as in the seat was literally pointing up in the air) and let’s just say it bruised me up good. I kept thinking I could just ride it out, literally, but it was violating me if you know what I mean. Ouch!
We showered quickly after class and grabbed brunch at Grey Bar before meeting up with the boys at the Museum of Natural History. It was so nice to have a little alone time with Brenda since we’re always insanely busy and usually meet up with the guys with us too. The food was super good and we have some plans to create a little business together. More on that when we know more!

Museum of Natural History was awesome. We saw a 25 minute planetarium space show that was mind blowing. It also made me extremely dizzy haha No pictures in there but here’s some from other parts of the museum.
You need an entire day to see the whole museum and I would rather stand outside naked in the cold than spend an entire day at the museum. I do NOT have that kind of patience! The boys went to get food at Shake Shack and Brenda and I got froyo at 16 Handles, our old stopping grounds.
Then it was Superbowl party time. John and I headed to the Upper East Side to party at my friend Alyse’s apartment with some of her awesome friends. We seriously had so much fun just eating a ton of delicious food, playing with her adorable puppy and playing the best card game of all time. A.k.a didn’t watch the game at all.
Such a fun weekend.
