More/Fitness Half Marathon

Half Marathon #5 was completed this past Sunday with my best friend Brenda. Truthfully, it was the worst race I can ever remember running. It was unexpectedly hot and we were dehydrated and completely over it from the start. We finished 4 minutes slower than our first half together last year (and 12 minutes slower than my PR), but this one included multiple walk breaks and about a 5 minute stop at the port-a-potties at mile 5, so we are still in much better shape than last year! At the end of the day, all that really matters is that we got out there and did what we could and we did it together which was automatically a blast.

Stuffed our faces afterwards at brunch with my new post-race ritual of chocolate chip pancakes, eggs and turkey sausage.

Followed by a pedicure that John treated me to. BEST IDEA EVER to get one after a half! The leg massage was so great. I broke my right big toe in half during this race along with worsening the permanent blister below my 2nd toe on the right side, too. It was a pretty painful pedicure to say the least.ย photo 4

I taught spin Monday morning with SO much less soreness than last month’s half! I ended up finishing last weeks training with 99 miles total of running and cycling. Insanity.

photo 3

My brother came to visit Monday night and stayed with us all day yesterday and John was also off of work from the day. We had a blast. Drew came to my spin class with me Tuesday morning and KILLED it! It was his first spin class ever and of course he beat me in mileage. Boys. Then we went to brunch with John, went back home and laid in my bed all day watching TV and napping. Dinner was Domino’s and POPEYES FRIED CHICKEN because we were just in need of a fat day. We ate super early and took another nap, so on the way to the bus station at 10 PM we stopped for froyo at Orange Leaf where they were selling froyo for $4.15 regardless of the weight of the cup for tax day. We ball hard.ย photo 4 (1)

It was a super fun few days and I’m paying for it today in exhaustion and bloat ๐Ÿ˜‰

Did any of you guys run the More/Fitness half last weekend? What did you think if you did or did it in the past? I just can’t pay $80 to run in Central Park again. Not when I run it for free and not when the swag bag is absolutely terrible!

Week Highlights

Happy Saturday! REALLY wish I was outside enjoying the gorgeous weather and not stuck at work. I’m also really over the fact that allergy season has now started, and going from a month of being sick straight into allergies basically feels like I’m just still sick. UGH! I take Zyrtec to ward off some of the symptoms, but it doesn’t seem to be helping much. I read this year will be one of the worst years for allergies in a long time. WHY. Puffy eyes and a dry, flaky nose really just isn’t my best look.

At least this week showed signs of spring. I made it a point to bring actual clothes with me to the gym in the morning even though I’m only in them for the train ride to work and then home. We have REAL ugly uniforms at work (if you know where I work you are probably even more shocked) so I basically never get to wear cute clothes anymore. It sucks and I miss it so much. Speaking of cute clothes, I am a big time hater of jeans but found really great fitting ones at Express. They offer low-rise, mid-rise, and high-rise which is spectacular if you are like me and don’t like the way low-rise jeans fit (more specifically- you don’t like your slight muffin top and butt crack hanging out of your pants). The mid-rise fit is perfect on me and even though I’m 5’7, my height is not at all in my legs so the ankle length fits me like just normal skinny jeans. I don’t have a pic of me in them but they are these. I think they call them a legging because they are stretchy and fit tight but they are definitely heavier like a real jean. Freaking love them and Express jeans have always been my personal favorite! Since I have their credit card, I get coupons all the time and got 4 pairs of those jeans, this top in mint green, and these sunglasses. On top of the coupons, I also had a $40 gift card they sent me for my birthday so I made out super well!

Besides my 2 mile run on Wednesday, no other running this week. Still. I’m telling you, I just can’t find my groove. I taught Spin Monday, Tuesday, Friday morning and this morning so I obviously still got my workouts in but running just keeps taking a back seat. If only I got paid for it ๐Ÿ˜‰ Ate some greatness though, of course.

First of all, how adorable is this new glass portable mason jar from David’s Tea? photo 1(1) I’ve been making iced tea with stevia in the early mornings to drink on my way to teach spin so that I’m not drinking so much coffee since having an iced soy latte at work is a non-negotiable. It’s more of a gentle way to wake up, I think!

After a particularly terrible Wednesday, I went to drown my sorrows in froyo at my favorite froyo joint Orange Leaf. They are more expensive than the others, but when you taste it you happily oblige. Plus I had a $3 coupon for my birthday. It was April 2nd and they had eggnog, my absolute favorite flavor of froyo. So that pretty much turned my frown upside down!

Last night John took me to a greek place I’ve wanted to try for a late birthday dinner since he was so sick last weekend. While it was a little pricier and the service totally sucked, the food was outrageously good. I ate more french fries than I care to admit and was extremely sick after but that is 100% my fault. The feta was amazing, the kebobs delicious and the jalapeno hummus with pita bread? Best thing ever.

If you like Greek food, I highly recommend Stix on East 23rd street!

What were your week highlights?

Favorite Greek/Mediterranean dish? I loooove hummus, pita bread, feta, and chicken shawarma so much.

Lose The Fluff

Howdy! Hope your weekend was fantastic and that you ate delicious foods and got in some workouts! I did the eating part but failed on the workout part for Saturday and Sunday. D’oh! But I did teach 2 VERY intense spin classes on Friday so I was completely toasted by Saturday. Here’s the playlist and what we did for Friday’s classes.

photo 1

Where Have You Been: Warm-Up

Safe & Sound: run with resistance/moderate hill with 3 seated pickups (at 0:58 for 15 sec/ 1:31 for 30 sec/ 2:36 for 30 sec)

We Can’t Stop: add more resistance to start climbing a 2-part hill. Add resistance after each chorus and push on the legs for the final 25 seconds of the song

Diamonds remix: continue on the hill & make it a heavy one; start off with a faster pace from 0:10-1:35 then back off & climb in position 3 for 2 minutes. Back to the saddle at 3:50 and pick up the pace for the last 45 sec.

Scream & Shout: light resistance fast legs- 15 sec sprints in position 3 at 1:14 and 2:57 (back to saddle in between keeping up a fast pace)ย

Wild Ones: run with resistance w/ 3 seated pickups for 30 sec (0:30), 60 sec (1:31) and 30 sec (3:04)

End Of Time: jumps on a moderate hill; 4 count jumps at 0:53, 8 count jumps at 1:42, 4 count jumps at 2:31, and 8 count jumps at 3:24. Easy to stay on the beat!

Applause: take off resistance for faster jumps: 2 count jumps on all 3 choruses. Keep a fast pace in between sets.

Video Phone: heavy hill, starting a rolling hill. Once the beat starts, alternate 15 seconds of climb with 15 seconds of fast for entire song!

She Wants To Move: lighten resistance but keep a moderate hill, 3 seated pickups for 20 seconds (0:51), 25 seconds (1:41), and 30 seconds (2:27)

Love On Top: back to heavy-ish climb but stay on the beat of the song. 40 seconds in position 3 at 1:01, back to saddle then up in 3 at 2:23 for rest of the song

I Love It- light resistance going right into 3 fast sprints at 0:23 (30 sec), 1:09 (35 sec) and 2:10 (20 sec)

Sweet Nothing- 3 more sprints to the finish! Class choice of doing sprints in the saddle or position 3. 2 15 second sprints and 1 30 second to finish.

Forrest Gump- cooldown, reusing this song because it is SO perfect for a serene cooldown!ย

Suffice to say after teaching 2 of those and a quick mile on the treadmill, I was sore, exhausted and famished. Cheeseless chicken and onion pizza from Domino’s with a side of marinara saved me.

photo 2

I swear to you this was the most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten. It was cooked so perfectly and from how hungry I was, I was ready to cry at how thankful I was for this pizza. Is that sad or awesome? This was eaten in bed (yeah, you probably wouldn’t want to sleep in our bed) with Johnny while we watched Weeds. We needed a new show to binge watch since we finished Breaking Bad and I am LOVING Weeds so far! It’s so much more light-hearted compared to Breaking Bad. Any Weeds fans out there?

Saturday night after work all day, we went to 5 Napkin Burger for date night. I know I’ve posted about this place a billion times but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I got the veggie burger with mushrooms and blue cheese and sweet potato fries.

photo 1

The burger was so good and I actually only ate about 3 fries. Trying to get back to listening to my body and not overeating since that’s been the theme of the last 2 months. Ugh!

We stopped in Victoria’s Secret so I could use my gift card from Christmas and since Orange Leaf was around the corner, I had to stop in.

photo 2 (2)

I took my cup home and ate that in bed, too. There is nothing more comforting than eating in bed for me. I am not a neat freak, therefore crumbs in my bed don’t bother me ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yesterday I wasn’t feeling too hot so we just lounged around all day and eventually went to the diner.

photo 3 (1)

Considering this was basically my only meal of the day, just let the pancakes and bacon slide okay? ๐Ÿ˜‰ After the diner we did laundry and I meal prepped for the week which is the first time in months. I’m just very ready to get back on track and lose the fluff. This is a super hard winter for everyone. I know the weather shouldn’t be an excuse to eat junk (but yet it’s so easy to blame it on) but it’s definitely an excuse to be running less. I can only run 1 mile on the treadmill before my foot feels like it’s breaking off, so the treadmill isn’t an option. It’s been too icy and slushy so I haven’t been able to do a long run and my next half marathon is on the 26th! I’m not sure if I’ll be doing it just yet but if I can get in at least 3 longer runs before then, I’ll give it a go.

I’ll share my “losing the fluff” meals throughout the week for accountability! Goal is to get to Friday nice and healthy, then have a little treat Friday night as fuel for my long run Saturday. I have to switch it to Saturday because I’m going to a dinner party Saturday night and planning on drinking a LOT of wine for the first time in months. ๐Ÿ˜€

How was your weekend?

Do you treat yourself on weekends? Yes but I need to reel it in and scale down the treats.

Don’t Make Me Laugh.

I am in so much pain right now. A good pain, but a strong one. I worked out with Brenda on Saturday morning, meaning I let her train me and I have never been in so much pain DURING a workout or after. Even after 4+ hours of cycling last week, she beat me to a pulp. More on that later, but let’s discuss the delicious food I’ve had since we talked last!

Backtracking to last week, I was so exhausted from my 3 spin classes in 24 hours that I took Wednesday and Thursday off to rest. Wednesday night my brother came down to the city so we met up in Brooklyn for pizza and froyo/Shake Shack. Grimaldi’s for pizza of course, 2 pies for the 3 of us. Demolished.

Pie 1 of 2.

My 2 favorite guys in the world!
My 2 favorite guys in the world!

On the way back to my brother’s car we passed Orange Leaf and since I was on an antibiotic last week, I figured I HAD to get my yogurt intake for the day. Right?!

photo 3 (3)

Sadly I barely made a dent into it. I wasn’t crazy full from the pizza but my appetite just isn’t as raging since I’ve been running less. Even tons of Spin doesn’t make me as hungry as running! Anyone else?! The boys got Shake Shack shakes and John literally ordered a double burger too. After 6 pieces of pizza. No words.

Friday I was off from job #1 but job #2 I had at 6:00 PM so I got to sleep in a little and then busted out 1 of my finals. My class Friday night was so great again! I am loving teaching cycling SO SO much and right now since I’m just subbing I have no classes scheduled this week and I’m so sad. Hoping someone will need a sub!

1.5 mile treadmill run first then class!
1.5 mile treadmill run first then class!

After class I went back home to finish another final and get to bed relatively early for my morning session with Brenda!

Saturday morning was so beautiful and I was so grateful to be off from work to enjoy it. Saturdays have a great feel to them when you don’t have to be stuck at a desk all day! I ran 3 miles first to warm-up and then Brenda put me through absolute torture. It looked like this:

  • 1500 meter row in 6 minutes. Broken into 500 meters in 2 mins, rest, then repeat 2 more times. I was almost in tears halfway through minute 1.
  • TRX squats (20), TRX bodyweight rows (10) , tuck jump to squat thrust x 15— repeat this circuit twice. The bodyweight rows were INSANELY hard!
  • Assisted pull-ups w/ a band. In a nutshell, I could basically not even do 1 WITH the band. Hardest thing ever, great thing to work towards!
  • 3 sets of 10 lat pulldowns w/ 72 pounds (random weight but on a machine)
  • Ab circuit: full sit up w/ legs on the ground (pilates move) on the way back bring your legs back and then reach up to touch toes x 15; feet in TRX strap, bring legs to chest then pike x5, feet in TRX strap, brings legs to chest then spread legs apart x10

Sorry if my descriptions are weird, not sure of proper names just yet! All I can say is that besides my shoulders/lats/forearms/every inch of my arms being insanely sore, my abs have NEVER felt sore from a workout before. I wanted to punch her in her face, naturally. It hurts so bad to laugh, cough and sit up. I will definitely be repeating this circuit on my own!! She is AMAZING at what she does. If you are in the NYC area and want her info to get training with her, let me know!!!!

No better way to start a weekend than sweating with your best friend. The rest of Saturday was spent brunching with John at Grey Dog, of course. Afterwards we got coffee and walked around for a few hours, before deciding to go home and just relax since it was pretty cold out. I got pretty wild and made a big bowl of chicken noodle soup and ate it in bed. Have you ever heard of such a wild Saturday night?!

photo 2 (4)

By the way, Progresso chicken noodle is really good.

I also had a few bites of a chocolate chip cookie dough Questbar after. After 3 bites I realized I could NOT bare the taste of it anymore. Over the summer I loved them, but I was also still using a lot of artificial sweeteners. Now that I eat mainly real food and only really use stevia in my coffee in the morning and that’s it, it tasted awful to me. It also upset my stomach within minutes. Not knocking but all in all they are a pretty fake food and I will not be ever buying them again!

Sunday morning I woke up planning to run 8-9 miles. I woke up exhausted, sore beyond words, and nothing in the world sounded better than going back to sleep and just spending the morning in bed with John. Something we never get to do! It felt amazing and I felt no regrets. I have 2 races this weekend and haven’t been running much at all, but I have no worries. I’m enjoying the rest of the year before I get serious again with training and it feelsย good!ย After snuggling for a few hours, we made our way to brunch at Brindle Room. A weekend with my 2 favorite brunch spots is THE BEST. We were ready to gnaw our arms off by the time we got there since it was 1:30 and we hadn’t eaten anything yet. He got his burger and fries, I had my favorite smoked pork hash and for “dessert” we split the banana challah french toast with nutella and fruit. YUM.

To avoid the food coma we were about to slip into, we walked around for quite awhile and did some shopping at Marshall’s. I got a new really big pot to make chili in, fleece lined leggings to run in, Nike training gloves (my hands get SO sweaty when I lift and hurt) and Nike dri-fit slight compression socks. I live and breathe for Marshall’s/TJ Maxx, dudes.

It started to snow around 4:30 so we made our way home and did a huge load of laundry. Our bag weighed probably 30 pounds and we have to lug it 2 blocks so we counted that as our workout. We worked up our appetite for dinner finally around 8:30 and got 2 human-sized pieces of pizza. $3 each. Can you seriously beat that?!

photo 3 (5)

(Don’t worry- I peeled off my cheese. Sigh ๐Ÿ˜ฆ )

Ha! So big
Ha! So big

Not the best pizza ever but good for being so cheap and huge.

And the weekend ended with setting up our first ever NYC Christmas tree that my roommate decorated so beautifully!

photo 2 (5)

So there ya have it. A solid week of workouts and not-so-healthy food. That’s what weekends are for!

So Whiny.

I need about 24 hours to just sleep. To have NO plans, nowhere to be, and to just be in my bed sleeping, resting and catching up on the 4 seasons of Breaking Bad that we’re behind on. (seriously, we’re only 5 episodes in on Season 1. I had never heard of it being such a great show until this year so I never put thought into watching it) I literally NEVER get to do this anymore and one of them is my own fault. On my days off, which are not consecutive days off 95% of the time, I COULD choose to lay in bed all day, but knowing I have to go back to work the next day means I want to be productive. It’s a vicious cycle because now I am so behind on sleep and relaxing and I can’t stand feeling like this. I am the grumpiest, moodiest, most awful person to be around when I lack sleep. So it comes as no surprise to me that this morning I overslept by an hour and ended up having to cut my run short (only 9.5 instead of 11 which isn’t a huge deal, but if you’ve trained for a half marathon then you know… that 1.5 miles feels like 100). My stomach was off (due to lack of sleep) and I was just so exhausted I wanted to scream. The fact that I pushed myself to run at all feeling this way is a sign that I have gained mental strength!

Last night we started my carb-loading off the way we always do: pizza and froyo. Here’s what the delicious pizza looked like:

photo 2

Here’s what it looks like when you’re lactose intolerant:

photo 3

You may wonder why the hell I still bother to eat it like this but honestly, the dough and sauce are the best parts to me! Not to mention how many calories I save by taking the cheese off. I also get a side of marinara or spaghetti sauce to dip. It’s reeeeaaallll good, but yes- I do miss the cheese a little.

Froyo time at my new favorite froyo place. Orange Leaf is the bomb.com!

photo 4

Isn’t it awesome that I match the wall? I’m pretty pumped that they already had pumpkin and gingerbread flavors out!!! I got both topped with nilla wafers, graham crackers, shredded coconut and Nutella. Byyyyyyyye.

Woke up an hour late so rushed around and had my half a banana with vanilla almond butter and coffee to go.

photo 5

It took me an hour to get to my gym because early morning weekend train schedules? FUGGEDABOUTIT! I was SO tempted to just go back up the stairs and back to bed, but I somehow stuck around for the 35 minutes waiting for the A train to arrive.

It was muggy out, I felt dehydrated, my stomach was pukey but also growling (WHY does it do that) but finally I made it to 9.5 miles.

photo (2)

I had exactly 15 minutes to be showered and ready to go to work to begin my 12 hour day. On a Saturday. YEP, so fun.

Clearly not the best day and just in its entirety, this week sucked. Go easy on me upcoming week, can ya?

Hope you’re having much better days that involve a great workout, good food and not working! ๐Ÿ™‚
